It has been a distinct pleasure to have been one of the shooters and editors for the film “Deer 139.” Last year, right around this time, four women (a biologist, a naturalist, an investigative public radio reporter, another filmmaker) and myself embarked on an adventure to migrate in the footsteps of a single, pregnant mule deer, Deer 139. She taught us so many things, including she’s way better at this than we are. Yes, as Sam (the biologist) so aptly put it, “I have snow up to my vagina...right now.” #adventuregirls #migration #muledeer #makelikeadeer #snowhike #wyoming #adventurefilm #onassignment #universityofwyoming @coalitionsnow #nationalgeographic #deer #followingwildlife #onthetrail #snowbound @jaymedittmar @wildfoundation @ilcp_photographers @natgeo @uofwyoming

Between 1500 and 1650, the Spanish imported 181 tons of gold and 16,000 tons of silver from the New World.
Pre-columbian people, though, valued other things higher than gold or silver, such as brightly-colored feathers, used to create stunning cloaks and amazing headdresses. Jewels were treasured, even those such as jade and turquoise. Surprisingly, cotton was highly prized, and garments made from it were also a sign of wealth; cacao beans were used as a form of simple currency.

This is an image from the project I’ve been working on for the past 18 months, what will become my first book, hopefully published in May this year. A series of photographs that analyze the repercussions of how this land (Guatemala) was conquered and colonized; also the inevitable scars of almost 500 years of disadvantage and unfair conditions, the Guatemalan highlands and their immense beauty are the perfect stage for my research and a series of trips searching for situations that create a personal connection with the neglected reality of our society.-Juan Brenner".- ⚡️

Arroyo es “el contador de pájaros” y nosotros los más afortunados del mundo por poder volar a su lado. Nadie más puede volar aquí. Hay quién piensa que este es el mejor trabajo del mundo. Yo lo afirmo

Tonatiuh rapidly began to demand gold in tribute from the Kaqchikels, souring the friendship between the two peoples. He demanded that the Kaqchikel kings deliver 1000 gold leaves each of 15 pesos. A Kaqchikel priest foretold that the Kaqchikel gods would destroy the Spanish and the Kaqchikel people abandoned their city and fled to the forests and hills on 28 August 1524 (7 Ahmak in the Kaqchikel calendar). Ten days later the Spanish declared war on the Kaqchikel.

Nan looking after the kids can take on a few different meaning across the world. For a day? A month? Most of childhood? Different cultures have different approaches. Some forced by circumstance or necessity. Still, family is the key for a child’s safe upbringing in most circumstances. .

Dinh Escaped
Portrait of Dinh (18) in her house. Meo Vac, Ha Giang province, Viet-Nam.
When she was 15, Dinh was offered a lift home with her friend Lia to avoid the long walk back to their village. However, it soon became clear that they were being driven in the wrong direction.
She was then taken to China, locked in a house and photographed for buyers. After being detained during eight months in captivity, Dinh managed to escape. Her friend Lia has not returned.
