This girls +29 contact came in yesterday so we got it put in this morning. We had gotten approval to put in her +26 contact because we’d been having such a rough time patching with her glasses on due to the eye turn towards her nose that still happens when patched.
Given that her eye turn is still happening, I am relieved we did surgery to clean her up capsule because I know without a doubt that the eye turn is not a result of any lens material regrowth.
Patching is back to being tolerable and she continues to make gains in her motor skills.

Four of my babes have worn glasses from an early age, but two of them have also struggled with amblyopia. Ruby had such a hard time adjusting to wearing glasses that I worried patching two hours a day was going to be an epic battle. I’m so proud of how mature and strong she has been. She reminds me every day that it’s time to do her patching, and even though I know it’s hard for her, she understands how important it is. #rubysmiles #grit #amblyopiakids #amblyopiaawareness #ortopad
This boy is all smiles...even when heading to the doctor’s office with an ear infection, the result of a cold that started more than a week ago. Despite not feeling well, Gus has patched and played great the entire time. I am continually in awe of his resilience and his ability to smile even when times are hard. I’m so proud of my sweet, strong, happy boy. I’m also proud and relieved to share that despite this sickness, the last 2.5 weeks have been our easiest patching weeks in many, many months! *Maybe*we’re turning a corner as Gus is getting older. Lately, he’s been trying to put his patch on by himself, choosing his rewards, verbalizing what he wants to do, and keeping his patch on in the car (first time he’s done this for long periods consistently since he turned 9 months old and figured out how to remove his patch). He’s even started telling me when the inside of his patch is wet. Instead of ripping it off in secret or having a battle over keeping an uncomfortable patch on, he now tells me if his patch is wet and requests a new one, then sits still while I put a dry patch on in its place. He is more aware, more vocal and has a better understanding of our expectations and rules about patch therapy. (It only took 2 years!) He also knows he can have a special treat when we put his patch on in the morning and again after nap. He knows he can watch a show with his patch, but that the TV gets turned off immediately if he takes his patch off. The other day, when Gus wanted to go outside and play, I told him he needed to put on shoes first. Then he said, “Shoes on! Patch on!” He finally understands that he gets to do the things he wants (usually) when he wears his eye patch! Consistency, persistence and routine are key! So for all you parents currently in a rough patch (*pun intended*), please know that it does get easier! We have had many difficult patching phases throughout this journey, and I know we’ll have more, but right now we’re in a good place and Gus’ vision is improving! For those with infants who just cry, close their eye, or sleep when the patch is on, look at Gus’ smile and see his wide, open eye! Patching isn’t easy, but it works!

When Austin was diagnosed with his cataract and amblyopia, we looked for support groups to know what to expect and how to deal. We came across @chipperspiratedays and it has been so comforting to know we aren’t alone on this journey. This stage in Austin’s life will pass one day as we move to glasses, to lens replacement surgery and hopefully to new contacts! Congratulations to Chipper as his vision improves, and we want to thank his mom for the custom patches that she made by hand. We cannot wait to try these bad boys out! #chipperspiratedays #chipperspatches #amblyopia #amblyopiakids #amblyopiaawareness #kidswhopatch #eyepatching #ortopad
Gus loved having his grandparents visit here for the last five days! I didn’t have to apply a single eye patch the whole time. Gus preferred having my parents put his patch and glasses on during their visit and he was more compliant during application time than he has been as of late. One bit of patching advice is to be willing to accept help and ask for help when it’s available. Something as simple as not having to apply Gus’ patch for a few days made a big difference. This morning Gus showed his grandfather the pirate designs on his patch and with a smile said “Ho-ho-ho” (Yo-ho-ho)!
