Meet Madeleine. I’ve seen this enchanting Parisienne dancing on the streets of Paris for years now, and I’ve always thought she looks as though she has shimmied her way from a past life as a Hemingway dancehall girl. This last time in town I had the chance to tell her how much joy she brings to everyone who happens upon her. You can usually find Madeleine in the Marais on a Sunday, or on the bridge between the two islands on other days of the week. She’s the star dancer for the jazz group, the New Rag Trio. In an earlier life the band was known as the Riverboat Shufflers, and Madeleine and her husband were such fans they’d regularly turn up and dance away for hours. When her husband passed away, Madeleine continued the tradition, as though it was a life force, and she became part of the extended musical family. After taking this photo, I later kicked myself that I hadn’t filmed Madeleine in action, so I trekked around for a few days trying to pin her down, but the rain kept her sunshine off the streets. The second slide is a snippet of a YouTube video I found (with thanks to Irina) so you can see Madeleine all her dancing glory. She is a true Parisian gem, one of those treasured characters that give a city its soul and colour, as is the band; pop them on your to-do list for the next time you’re in town ❤️
