‘The Handmaiden’ takes place in the 1930s Korean landscape before the era of World War, where a con-woman Sookee (Kim Tae-ri) was hired by Count Fujiwara (Ha Jung-woo) to infiltrate the personal life of a Japanese heiress named Lady Hideko (Kim Min-hee) in hope that she could persuade Hideko into marrying Fujiwara hence seizing her away from her autocratic and fiendishly filthy uncle, Kouzuki (Cho Jin-woong). Kouzuki is an enthusiastic scavenger of the lecherous rare art pieces, and he likes to utilize Hideko as a performer in his private traditional erotica poem readings. Fujiwara's end goal of this mission is to take over controls over every piece of Hideko’s fortunes and if Sookee succeeds in persuading Hideko, she's bound to get her share in the amount of 100,000 yen. The plan takes a huge turn when Sookee and Hideko unexpectedly develops a genuine feeling for each other.

Park Chan-wook (the one behind the one of a kind ‘Oldboy’) has once again invented a rare breed of a cinematic gem by his gold-producing hands. This feature excellently adapted the classic England set and heavy Dickensian story nuance from the ‘Fingersmith’ novel (written by Sarah Waters) into a periodic cultural Korean surrounding. ‘The Handmaiden’ is technically and socially exceeding all the boundaries because Chan-wook did not hold back at all in exploiting the overarching theme of eroticism temptation and he packaged it up with a vigorous use of grotesque thriller tropes to enhance the experience. While it used an aggressive quantity of explicit visual sexuality and lexical debauchery, it never condescends itself into a lewdly cheap adultery. That tastes combination coming out from this film is very seducing to the point it feels like you’re watching a chef cooking a sophisticated three-course meal right in front of your eyes as each scene will leave you hungry for what comes next.

Мрачная, тягучая атмосфера, чувственный, наполненный символизмом триллер, красивая операторская работа и ОЧЕНЬ фотогеничные актеры. Я люблю, когда сюжет закольцован. Начало фильма, это и его конец.
Тут все очень "стильно" сделано, начиная от затейливых титров, и заканчивая интерьерами и эмоциями героев. Такой услады для глазы я не встречала со времен "Одинокого мужчины" от Тома Форда, а он стилист (кстати, Мэттью Гуд снимался в двух этих фильмах). Фильм гипнотизирует, невозможно оторваться, а сцена, где двое играют на рояле, я считаю настоящим шедевром чувственности. А какая волшебная музыка! (Филип Гласс специально написал музыку для упомянутой сцены с роялем, и еще очень красивая песня «Summer wine»). ⭐️
глазу 5, сердцу 4, уму 5
9 из 10 за такую идеальную картинку, остальное можно простить.
Эти фильмы позволяют окунуться (но, не утонуть!) в то, что творится у них в голове. И сделать правильные выводы (насколько это возможно, разумеется) ⭐️
