‘Long, long ago, when we did not exist, when perhaps our great-grandfather’s were not in the world, in a land not so very far away, in the earth in front of the sky, on a plain place like in a vether, seven versts aside, there lived a peasant and his wife and they had twins alike as the snow - a son and a daughter.’
. ~Gingerbread by Robert Dinsdale 2014 ~ .
I absolutely loved reading The Toymakers by Robert Dinsdale last winter, so when I saw his previous novel Gingerbread, on the shelves of the tiny bookshop that is @stivesbookseller last summer, I knew that it had to come home with me! .
Synopsis:
In Belarus, a land of endless ancient forests, an orphaned boy must scatter his mother’s ashes. His mama has extracted a solemn promise to stay beside and protect grandfather, whatever happens.
On their journey into the woodland, hunks of mama’s gingerbread sustain the young boy as grandfather’s magical tales push the hard world away.
But the driving snow masks a frozen history of long-buried secrets. And as man and child forge further, grandfather’s tales turn to terrible truths of times past.
.
With Grimm’s Fairy Tales mingling with the ancient folk tales of Belarus, Dindsale’s Gingerbread promises a dark read....... as dark as the treacle in the recipe for gingerbread itself! Does anyone else fancy a taste?!
.
P.S. Did you know that the story of Hansel and Gretel originated from the Great European Famine of the 1300’s, when children were abandoned and left to fend for themselves?
It's suddenly turned freeeezing out!
I warmed up with a coffee and a roaring fire this morning and now I'm trying to decide between a hot chocolate or a rooibos tea. Hot water bottles and blankets are a must in my draughty old house at the moment.
So, can I tempt you with a thick slab of Yorkshire Parkin? It's a really delicious warming treat.
Parkin is a sticky oat ginger cake that’s simple to make. It gets even better if you can leave it a few days to get even stickier! Perfect for Bonfire night. ⠀
