I asked Nick to come with me to the arena and just watch Raven and I. I didn’t want to be alone. Honestly all of this made me feel weird Inside. Nick didn’t know half the story though. I told him Raven was being weird. Not that it was the aggressive kind of weird. That would have been a helpful thing to tell him before he watched us ride. Oh well. • I placed my hand on the saddle, making Raven prance and sidestep. He pinned his ears. Nick was sitting on the fence behind us, and his calm expression quickly turned to worried. I shot him an apologetic smile, and then jumped up into the saddle. Raven didn’t like that. His ears flipped back again. We weren’t even moving, and he was already fussing about SOMETHING that I did. • I gathered my reins and shortened them, and then squeezed my legs. Raven threw his head, but managed to start walking very slowly. I tried turning him towards the fence, but he insisted on going the other direction. I took a deep breath. I would start getting mad, which would make him more mad, if I didn’t calm down. I could hear Nicks voice slightly. “Kate there’s something wrong with him.” This was enough to distract me from what was underneath me. “Yeah I’ll get off in minute, usually thi-“ I was stopped short. • Raven’s front legs left the ground and he reared up, spinning around. I grasped his neck, but while I was talking, I lost a stirrup. My leg was slipping, fast. I couldn’t hold on. Before I knew it, I was hitting the ground and my head was spinning. I was covered in dirt but that wasn’t my concern. Raven was towering over me as I lay helpless on the ground. His ears were pinned, AGAIN. I reached out a hand to stop him, as if he understood the meaning. • I snapped my head in Nicks direction. He was running toward us, an even more worried and scared look on his face. Just as Raven started to come down, Nick grabbed my hand and pulled me up off the ground. Raven landed right where my legs would have been. Great. Nick looked me up and down, “Are you ok? That was a nasty fall you had there,” he asked softly. “I’m scared. Scared of what has happened to him.” I whispered. (CONTINUED)
