Monday takes Pechuga to the Garment District in Downtown LA. I’m working with my friend, Jesse, a corset maker in bringing yet another Vivienne Westwood corset back to life (a 1991 museum piece)! Vivienne Westwood Gold Label waistcoat jacket from "Five Centuries Ago", AW97/98. Pechuga gets existential (this is long so brace yarself). So one of the main things that I get asked all the time is, "How are you able to let go of certain things? Don't you want to keep it for your archives?" Honestly- no. Save for some very special pieces in my closet that I wear there are very few things that I keep that come through my hands (I can think of only two exceptions off the top of my head). As some of you may know before I owned Pechuga I used to work for Vivienne Westwood. For a while actually. I bought this waistcoat jacket while I was still working for her and I remember opening the box and showing my colleagues at work- to my surprise they were all very excited to see it. Pechuga as a business wasn't really a thing at that point but things started getting serious after I found myself investing my own money into pieces like these. I remember at that point thinking, "Oh my God, what if I run out of things? To buy? To sell?" Thankfully I've been proven wrong time and time again. It's a bit odd how we attach feelings to inanimate objects. I'm clearly passionate about clothes but I think I find more joy in passing them along and seeing how other people make use of items I personally find beautiful. Vivienne Westwood AW1994/95, “On Liberty” collection. In a 1996 interview Westwood was asked why she decided to bring the bustle back into fashion, to which she responded by saying she wanted simply to create something beautiful and extreme and to push the techniques of the tailors that worked with her. To date Westwood credits “On Liberty” as being one of her best collections. The bustle seen in the show served as the direct inspiration for Westwood’s centennial Louis Vuitton bum bag which Pechuga highlighted over the weekend.
