The look on my face is NOT “slay”. It is annoyance. Very genuine annoyance, because the entire zipper of this dress broke off and half the back unthreaded, and this was the very first time I’d worn it. I’m holding the whole thing together with that hand behind my back. Annoying.
But what does it mean that I was able to take this reasonably nice photo, which looks good on the surface, but doesn’t convey the fact that the item is (at best) faulty and (at worst) poorly made with bad craftsmanship?
What does it mean when social media is able to influence your purchasing behaviors, but without necessarily giving any ex-ante indication of product quality?
Swipe to understand how the combination of fast fashion companies and the rise of social media influencers are altering the landscape of retail clothing.
Certainly don’t take this as an indictment of any one company, because although many items I’ve gotten are fantastically well made, I’ve also purchased items from multiple companies that may look good in photos, but can only be worn a handful of times before they fall apart.
Nor is this placing blame on social media influencers (a category which I tend not to place myself).
It is bringing up the question of whether there is any responsibility on either part to somehow communicate “Yea it’s cute, but not particularly durable” or “It’s both amazing in the photo and extremely well made” to potential consumers. Product reviews exist, but not for every brand or every item.
Just a few thoughts. Anyone else had this happen?
Unless it’s only me who gets keeps getting cute clothing catfished.
