Blackberries mounted in a shallow shadow box. This project challenged me in new ways: using new forms of displaying my work, using new-to-me materials, exploring composition on a vertical plane (something I really haven’t done since painting in college).

Recently I’ve really been inspired by conversations @goldenagebotanicals and I have been having about finding and holding your creative style, and the ebbs and flows an artist goes through. And then @cultivatedbychristin posted her musings about the word ‘pentimento’ as it pertains to changes in an artist’s work, and it all feels very relevant for me right now. Change, as they say, is the only constant. .

Pentimento, the latest project is a series of alluringly painting-like photographs that depict the beauty found in the visceral colour of Venice’s historical walls.
Deriving from the word ‘Pentirsi’, meaning to repent or change your mind, Pentimento is an insight into the seasoned life of these Venetian artefacts, constantly altered and painted over by their owners to form unintentionally graphic compositions. Eroded by nature, each sun washed surface tells its own unique story through unrefined textures and raw colours.
Exhibited and sold at Paul Smith Albemarle Street

As I work a design I often think of the term ‘pentimento’, from the Italian verb pentirsi, which means to repent. In painting, ‘pentimento’ refers to a change made by the artist in the process of painting. This could be at the level of the underpainting or a later alteration, a layer of paint telling the story of a change of heart.

How often do we do this as we assemble flowers in a vase? We begin in one direction and take-off in another. Vestiges of early decisions linger—a base note of foliage, say, or a flower reversed from view, or an over-trimmed branch tucked under a flower as a prop.
.
Much as in painting, these are traces of previous decisions hidden beneath the surface of the work, but still a fundamental part of it. To borrow from the painter Sanya Kantarovsky, we can find meaning and pleasure in ‘revealing the doing in the done.’ All artists change their minds.....And that’s precisely what happened with @seaberrygarden’s gorgeous arrangement yesterday once we put this ensemble up for a picture. Thankfully happiness in the doing/done. .
Foliage here is copper beech, with flowers from the garden including tulips ‘blue diamond’, ‘Belle Époque’, ‘Copper image’, with dried hops, Ranunculus and hellebores. .
In other news, it’s hailing outside! Not good for flowers, but great for writing ♀️Wishing you a cozy evening ⛄️#pentimento #arthistorylesson #painterly
