⚜️ THE PERSONAL STATEMENT ⚜️ • I’ve gotten questions recently about the personal statement BOTH for med school and residency apps, so here’s one of my earlier posts about the PS!! Applications are starting soon so NOW is the time to start! • 1️⃣ First step—deep breath: sometimes the PS is hyped up as being more important than it is. However, it really is your only chance to express yourself at the pre-interview stage and get your foot in the door, whether you’re applying for a job, a research stint, med school, or residency. • 2️⃣ Stay focused. What is the point of your PS? Keep that in mind, and make sure each part of your PS (whether you’re telling a clinical vignette, recounting childhood experiences, etc.) contributes to that goal. • 3️⃣ Keep it short. Especially if you’re applying to med school or residency, readers won’t have time to read through your life story when they are combing through hundreds of applications. Keep it less than a page! • 4️⃣ Have a friend proofread it—someone who knows you well and knows your passions and motivations. They’ll be the best resource of telling whether your PS is still “you.” • 5️⃣ If grammar isn’t your forte, then definitely have someone read it. • 6️⃣ I went through many, many edits, and saved a new version each time I made a major organizational change. Sometimes I had to revert back to an older version since I’d like it better! • 7️⃣ If what you’re applying for asks for a CV or resume, then make sure your PS isn’t a regurgitation of your CV. • 8️⃣ I am not a fan of self-promotion, but unfortunately that’s the game—your PS will have to show why you are the ideal candidate. Just don’t be obnoxious • 9️⃣ How I structured my residency PS by paragraph: (1) clinical vignette of my first exposure to plastic surgery, (2) tie-in to my background in tissue engineering research, (3) my exploration of plastic surgery in med school, (4) tie-in to my passion for global surgery, (5) synthesis, revisiting clinical vignette. • Lemme know what other questions you have! Sometimes you'll spend the majority of your #medicalschool interview talking about one of your hobbies or unique achievements. This is great because your passion will come through as you talk about those things, and they'll make you stand out.⁣ ⁣ Many interviewers prep for the interview by quickly reading through your app, especially your #personalstatement, so be sure to mention your hobbies and memorable experiences in your personal statement.⁣ ⁣ It's never too early to start thinking about what stories you might include in your personal statement. You need to be able to connect these stories in some way to how and why you realized you want to be a doctor. | Why Do You Want To Be A Doctor | Personal statements part 1. I will never ever stop talking about personal statements because they’re such an important part of your application. At this point I’ve read so many, and I want to make this very clear. What a personal statement is: ‍⚕️ A 5,300 character essay which explicitly explains why you want to be a doctor. ‍⚕️ A clear demonstration of your interpersonal skills (shown through examples, and stated bluntly.) ‍⚕️Your story centered around 2-3 main ideas. A personal statement is not: ‍ An autobiography of your life and every thing that’s happened to you since birth. ‍ A place to describe how hard your life is, or to throw a pity party for yourself. Talk about your experiences briefly then show what you LEARNED and how it made you GROW. Not that you should get into med school because your life was hard. ‍ A place to quote famous people. No. This is why YOU want to be a doctor not Martin Luther King Jr. does. ‍ A place to show how impressive your vocabulary is. Don’t use weird big words, your reader is not a dictionary and they will not google your fancy words they’ll just “nope” you. When writing your statement, pick a few things that were MOST impactful in your decision to pursue medicine! Write about them! Give a few specific examples. In 1 or 2 sentences explicitly state some of your interpersonal skills (after showing them in a story) because sometimes after 1,000 essays your reader isn’t going to get subtlety. More personal statement advice coming soon because this is so important.

Your #personalstatement is your chance to expand on so much more than what the rest of your application is telling the admissions committee.⁣ ⁣ This is where emotion and passion can come through, and you can be a real person expressing your passion for medicine to others who have dedicated their lives to medicine, too.⁣ ⁣ You get to tell your story and convey what's driving you, why you want to be a doctor. ⁣ ⁣ Don't just make it a CV.
