NERD ALERT! Have we met For those of you that don’t know, I made this Instagram account into a mama/science/lifestyle platform less than 6 months ago. The account has grown from a modest 99 followers to nearly 650! I am shocked, humbled, empowered, flattered, excited...I could go on and on. Why am I mentioning this? Well, I decided that I need to reintroduce myself to all of you out there who are new to #lafinthelab! Welcome and thank you so much for following! My name is Lindsey Avery Fitzsimons, but my boss and many of my friends call me “LAF”, which I like to think is attributed to the fact that I am generally very positive and enthusiastic about what I do! My journey into science has not been a focused one, but rather, a path that I have continued to follow based on projects, people and science that has excited me along the way. I started college @skidmorecollege majoring in art and art history, but quickly discovered that I was much more fascinated by the inner workings of what went on underneath the skin! I credit Skidmore for both allowing me and supporting me to have such a multidisciplinary journey and feel grateful to have experience such a nurturing environment to explore my interests. Fast forward 5 (ok 12....ok 15) years and I am still loving my science/art hybrid! I have found scientific research to be incredibly welcoming to those “outside of the box” thinkers but also to those who make it a priority to illustrate the science in a way that is aesthetically enticing!! How do scientists study tiny proteins ▫️⠀⠀⠀ So much of the research that biologists do involves studying different proteins and their interactions in a living organism. Proteins are involved with almost every process in an organism. Whether you are studying plants, bacteria, parasites, aquatic organisms or mammals, the process of acquiring these tiny proteins is fairly similar. ▫️⠀⠀⠀ The first step is obtaining all of the RNA from an organisms. RNA carries all of the genetic information in an organisms… and these genes encode PROTEINS. For parasites, they are so tiny that you can use a whole worm for an RNA extraction. Whereas, studying larger animals would require you to only need a small tissue sample. ▫️⠀⠀⠀ In this picture I am performing an RNA extraction on the heartworm parasite that infects household pets. The pretty pink colour come from a reagent called “Trizol” used to break down the initial tissue sample, allowing the RNA to leave the cell and come into solution➡️. Chlorophorm is added next to allow for a phase separation, and all of the RNA to migrate to the upper clear layerand all of the debris to settle in the pink layer. From here we can purify the RNA. ▫️⠀⠀⠀ Once the RNA is obtained, cDNA is synthesized. cDNA (copy DNA) is the template required to clone a gene. Cloning a gene involves copying it into an expression system (plasmid) that allows you to study it! This process alone can take months sometimes… but it’s what allows us to study these tiny proteins!! ▫️⠀⠀⠀ The research I do involves studying the proteins in a different expression system…which are frog eggs! ✨Can YOU do both ✨? ▫️⠀⠀⠀⠀ Lately I have been seeing more and more memes on Instagram along the lines of this picture, but only the “Dr.” box is checked off. I’ve also seen ones with a bunch of ladies showing off their wedding rings while the other friend holds up her Degree parchment… Both displays imply that as women we have a choice, Marriage and being a homebody OR education and making it in the work force. BUT this TOTALLY isn’t the case anymore‍♀️! You can get married, have a family, AND be a kick-ass women in big establishments. ▫️⠀⠀⠀⠀ I have surrounded myself with some pretty impressive women, who are killing it in the corporate world and others who are doing amazing things with their research…. While also holding it down at home.. Personally I love all of the home-y things like cooking big meals, organizing, and cleaning (washing dishes by hand is legit the most calming thing for me). While I always dreamed of getting married on day, I also had a dream of pursuing a positon in Academia ‍. Thanks to the support I have from my family and hubby, both of these dreams have come true. ▫️⠀⠀⠀⠀ WHERE ARE MY BOSS FEMALES AT I am challenging YOU, to show me how you can #DoBoth !
