It's Saturniidae. This is the largest moth native to North America, the cecropia. Cecropia moths are members of the family #Saturniidae which are some of the most stunning insects on the planet. I like to think of their family name as "from another planet," which makes sense - from my understanding the Latin etymology of Saturniidae derives from Greek mythology. Giant silk moth life cycles are absolutely crazy. Many have vestigial mouthparts and guts as adults and they live only to breed. Vestigial traits are traits that are useless, like our tailbone (coccyx). Large and wide antennae are present with male moths like this one and thin and long with females. Can you see the arachnid hanging out on this moth in the first picture? Cecropia moths and other saturniids are known to travel great distances throughout their short lives, living off of nutrients from when they were caterpillars (check out cecropia caterpillars once, they're harmless but *look* dangerous). Females emit pheromones that males pick up with their wide antennae from miles away. Think about a satellite in space picking up signals from all over this planet. Pheromone detection is present with many moth species and proves to be successful. Pheromone detection is also present with many animals across this planet. This includes us when we're not confused by artificial smells. I'm fortunate to live in an apparent hot spot for giant silk moths, for now. Pesticides destroy these beauties and I'm surprised I see as many as I do. Isoamyl acetate, also known as isopentyl acetate, is a colourless liquid that has a strong odour described as similar to both banana and pear . It occurs naturally in the banana plant, although it can also be produced synthetically. Isoamyl acetate is used to confer banana flavor in food , and in fact, banana oil commonly refers to a solution of isoamyl acetate in alcohol that is used as an artificial flavour. It is also used as a solvent for some varnishes and nitrocellulose lacquers. Because of its intense, pleasant odour and its low toxicity, isoamyl acetate is used to test the effectiveness of respirators or gas masks . Interestingly, isoamyl acetate is released by a honey bee's sting apparatus, where it serves as a pheromone beacon to attract other bees and provoke them to sting. I often get asked "why is my cat spraying outside the box?" (AKA 'inappropriate urination'). My answer is that it depends and there's several medical and behavioral explanations for this. I first recommend ruling out medical causes such as UTI's, kidney disease, diabetes, etc. and this can be accomplished with bloodwork and a urinalysis. Keep in mind other diseases can cause this such as arthritis and regardless, looking into other health issues requires consultation with your local vet. Now if your cat is apparently physically healthy then I worry about behavioral issues and one of the most common causes of inappropriate urination is stress. Many cats can stress out easily and from stressors like a new pet, a new child, visitors, home improvement/construction, or even just the presence of another cat in the house. Removing your cat's stressor(s) isn't always an option but there are effective ways to mitigate it! One of the easiest things you can do is plugging in @comfortzonepets Calming pheromone diffuser.
