Vampirism (aka Phlebotomy) . I was trained in phlebotomy while working as a medical assistant. However, when I wanted to work as a phlebotomist in a hospital I needed the official certification! You can find a phlebotomy certification class through many hospitals or private offices. If you choose to work for a plasma center, or the American Red Cross they will usually train you or pay for your training. My phlebotomy course licensed me only in the state of Utah and it lasted for 5 Saturday’s (10 AM — 5 PM). Usually we left early though. We learned the anatomy of the arm, the types of tubes and coagulants used, and of course how to perform a blood draw. I mainly did phlebotomy work for my research lab after working as a medical assistant. . I highly recommend phlebotomy as a way to get clinical experience. You can work at a hospital, private clinic, the Red Cross, and there are many other options. It’s important to note that working at a plasma center is not a good clinical experience because the people you are drawing blood from aren’t sick. I LOVE drawing blood so much. I’m happy I have this skill and if you’re trying to decide if it is worth your time — it IS!! I HIGHLY recommend looking into drawing for the Red Cross if possible because that’s something I always wish I did! . Second photo: we use a tourniquet to compress the blood vessels and dilate the vein. We then use our finger and awesome skills to find a vein. We then sterilize the area with a alcohol pad, and down the arm we anchor the vein with our thumb. We take the needle with hub cap and enter it in the vein (it needs to be perfect, not to deep and not too shallow). If you puncture the vein all the way through it can cause clotting and bad bruising. Then anchor the needle with your dominant hand and insert the tubes into the hub cap where there is a backwards needle. The tubes have vacuum suction and if your needle is properly entered into a vein then you’ll see blood start flowing in. If there is no blood, your needle is not in a vein.
