Wedding-less this weekend so I’m going on a girls trip with my toddlers to visit my college best friends and family in Des Moines! My cousins are having babies so our babies are also gonna hang.
.
The last time I went there without also having to shoot a wedding there and with babies in tow was a LONG time ago, so here’s to making time even in wild seasons. This goal gets more important with every year I get older. ✨
.
Since Des Moines is ever evolving, what are the new spots to check out?!
Who are they? Spotlight them! They loan you gear, refer you work, give you tips or just encourage you. Those that have been tagged in the comments, feel free to join this already amazing community of photographers.

I’m a peacemaker and like making people smile so it feels a bit off to write this but feels so necessary to share after this week full of reminders. Heavy heart today.
.
Just here to remind you that life is now and is being made up of all the lil moments. Pleaseeee wake up to your life today, focus on things that truly matter to you, work late when you need to but take breaks to cuddle with your babies, and stop waiting for life 10 years from now. ✌
.
My dad passed away when he was 28 and my mom when she was 56. Both of them probably figured they had soooo much time left.
.
So much of me is a *yes today* kinda person because of this. Specifically this past year.. I figured why not foster a child this year rather than waiting til I was 35 and had things “together”. Lil Sis would’ve been a preteen by the time we said yes to her.
.
Part of me wants to apologize for bringing this reminder here but I hope it speaks to some of you as much as this week’s reminders have spoken to me.
As it starts to (finally!) warm up here in New England, I've got my 2018 June photography and business workshop on my mind! This year it will be taking place in the beautiful Berkshires of Massachusetts. Registration is now open! If you have any questions, don't hesitate to email me at ashleylargesse@gmail.com! Hope you'll join me! #photographer #portraitphotography #weddingphotographer
GRATITUDE AND FEAR OF BEING AN EMPLOYEE.
Iceland, a photographers paradise. My eleventh time and this night were special. We drove all night, listened to music, talked, ate chocolate and had a power nap with the mountains outside. That night when sunset and sunrise blended together, and we didn't care about what time it was (my body did tho, after coming home 4.30 AM ). ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀
⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀
I felt such strong gratitude during this trip. Gratitude over all years of hard work in my business, that allows me to escape like this. I remember the days as an employee, before 2008. I had such anxiety before every workday, and I felt trapped. Trapped that someone else decided over my days and that my efforts never affected my income, only my bosses. I was scared before taking the step to start my business. Scared of running bankrupt, never have a day off or afraid of the "failure" (whatever that is). ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀
⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀
My fear of returning to that job kept me going. I refused to give up, and that is one of the reasons why I succeeded. I didn't wait for the "perfect timing", I just jumped. ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀
⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀
My boyfriend (who is a biomedical engineer), loves to be an employee. This life is not for everyone, but I think MANY people are too afraid to jump, so they get stuck in that comfort zone. It's hard to make things happen if you work 100% with other things, magic happens outside your comfort zone, it doesn't knock on your door . ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀
⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀
If you have a dream and wish you'd do something else during your days, please listen to that voice ❤ We are here for such a short time, and you deserve to fill your days with things that get you FIRED UP. I promise you that you have what it takes, cause your dreams will be your force. YOU DESERVE THIS. TRUST ME ❤
⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀

Comment below with your thoughts about this, I'd be happy to encourage you ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀

PHOTOGRAPHERS: What happened to your Facebook page?
I know, I know. I'm not here to put blame on your activity on Facebook, but to explain a few things to help you show up there better
⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀
⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀
The truth is, many photographers experience better engagement on Instagram compared to Facebook, and there's a reason for that. ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀
⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀
We all know about the algorithm that hides our posts, and how we struggle to be seen, right? The thing is, the algorithm is only awarding posts that people actually like, rather than random posts. ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀
⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀
The change on Facebook happened over time. We stopped to use Facebook the way we did before. We don't publish updates as much as before, and we're pretty tired of scrolling the feed. This led to Facebook muting a LOT of business pages, cause there was simply too much as compared to "genuine" content. Facebook (and most platforms), wants you to spend as much time as possible at their site, meaning they want to show you inspiring videos and content that moves you. When you do a regular post at your business page on Facebook, it simply doesn't show as much. ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀
⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀
The secret on Facebook is to publish more personal and emotional content, cause they get prioritized in the feed and are more likely to get comments. It could be a post about why you are a photographer, a special story from your clients, or a heartwarming video with music from a session. So use Facebook for that kind of posts, and keep posting inspiring and educational posts at Instagram and Pinterest, I promise you will see a huge difference in your engagement! ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀
⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀
❤ Send a if you sometimes forget about your Facebook page ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀

Discover Magazine April 2016 cover by Royce Bair. How did I sell this photo and 2 other full page images to Discover? By using the power of “stock” — stock photography. Hundreds of my images are with various stock photo agencies, i.e. GettyImages.com, 500px.com and Shutterstock.com. Not only do these agencies generate a monthly “royalty” income for me, but many potential buyers, like Discover, see my work and contact me directly to find out what other images I might have available on a subject. To learn more about stock, you can read an article I wrote nine years ago at BestSellingStockPhotos.com …it’s a little out of date, but the principles are still the same. .
People and lifestyle photos sell the best. Most of us don’t want to hear that. We’d rather just continue to take “pretty” travel and landscape pictures. Although the competition in this last category is fierce, one can rise to the top with unique imagery. A good example is the work of @bejamin . What makes Ben Everett’s work so salable is it’s simplicity in design. Not only are Ben’s images strikingly beautiful and well composed, they are without clutter. Everett has given graphic designers the creative freedom to do their work. Many of his images would make excellent magazine covers or double-page spreads because there is plenty of gorgeous design space for mastheads, text and other photos. His images are also “iconic” —they read instantly. You rarely have to study the photo to know what’s going on.
