Another black hole post. I decided to include the Kerr metric with the new image from the Event Horizon Telescope, to show the mathematics of rotating black holes, as we have observed M87’s black hole to be rotating (and we expect real black holes to rotate). .

As explained in previous posts, the metric tells you how to measure “spacetime intervals” (the spacetime equivalent of a distance), in a particular region of spacetime. The metric completely describes the geometry of spacetime, and you can directly calculate the curvature from it. The variables are: r is the distance away from the center of mass, r_s is the Schwarzschild radius, θ and φ are the spherical coordinate angles, a is the angular momentum per unit mass, Σ ~ r^2 + a^2 (plus a couple other terms) is an effective radius.
