〰️ i am am openly (and proud AF) queer womxn, married to the love of my life and have a pretty cushy experience being a white, queer womxn in this country (recognizing that being a queer POC is very fucking different in terms of safety and recognition) and in the place i choose to be my home in Prince Edward County. yesterday, one of our local churches, who so many folks out here are tied to, wrote the following message on their bulletin: . . . .“A reminder that Catholics and all other Christians should not attend LGBTQ2 “Pride Month” events held this month. They promote a culture and encourage activities that are contrary to Christian faith and morals. This is especially harmful to children because it could lead them away from God’s revealed Truth. Even in “The County” there are Pride flags and banners flying courtesy of the Government. Think.........these are your tax dollars at work!” . . . so much of this message is laughable to me. so much of this message and the many things that were said IN DEFENSE of this homophobic rhetoric rattle my insides. the prince edward county community page on facebook was a mess, and ended in the moderators deleting most of the threads (filled with important information from our LGBTQ2+ community), turned off comments and eventually archived the whole group. . . . a quick FYI: silencing folks who are speaking up against hate speech is a form of violence. . . . however, the thing about hate is when it is exposed the wonder of community often comes together. i saw this community unite in ways i have not seen (and many people i totally did not expect to show their support) before. to those of you who wrote messages, called and knocked on the door of the church yesterday, i thank you. from the bottom of my heart. this whole experience is very sobering, and i will continue to raise my voice and show up so that our LGBTQ2+ communities are not only safe, but celebrated.
