In 1960, Queen Sirikit and her husband, King Bhumibol Adulyadej, embarked on a six-month tour of fifteen Western nations. The state visits were meant to be the young couple's formal introduction to the west. Queen Sirikit engaged the French couturier Pierre Balmain to provide her with a fashionable Western wardrobe for the tour, a working relationship that lasted for twenty-two years.

Around 1963, Pierre Balmain, along with French couture embroiderer François Lesage, began making the queen's Thai national dresses. In the 1970s their work extended into developing various strategies to transform Thai village silks into fashionable Western clothes worn by Queen Sirikit to support and promote her initiatives in crafts revival.
Queen Sirikit' traditional dress (Thai Chakri) by Pierre Balmain, ca. 1960s.
From the Queen Sirikit Museum of Textiles: "Named for the Chakri Maha Prasat Hall at the Grand Palace, Thai Chakri is a very formal gold or silver metal-thread brocade evening dress. The style features a skirt with a front pleat and an attached traditional Thai shoulder cloth. It is often embellished with embroidery. Thai Chakri is one of eight styles of Thai national dress developed by Her Majesty between 1958 and 1964."
Some further undergarment inspiration provided by Brigitte Bardot in UNE PARISIENNE (1957). What an outfit - both dressed & “undressed”.
With Pierre Balmain as Costume Designer, it is no wonder that they’re so beautiful.
✨
Interestingly, it was released in the very same year as SILK STOCKINGS (see last post). Must have been a great time for petticoats!
