Into sunflowers lately

In observance of International Sculpture Day that was on April 27 this I was a project that I had the privilege of being a part of : The Workers. These are located along the Monongahela River in Pittsburgh’s Southside in the shadow of the Birmingham Bridge. . . The Workers were built by a group of Pittsburgh artists over the course of 16 years. It was donated to the City of Pittsburgh for their 250th year celebration. Most of the pieces used in this were salvaged decking from the Hot Metal Bridge when it was repurposed in the late 90’s. The “armor” pieces were tank walls salvaged from various parts of the furnaces from the demoed Jones & Laughlin Steel site. . I was asked to be a part of this project by the person spearheading this idea at the time, artist Tim Kaulen @t_kaulen. The first sculpture was a set of legs when I signed on to this project. The first picture was taken by Pittsburgh photographer Dan Mohan who documented this process over the years. Nearly every piece of this was mocked up in wood before being applied to steel. In the first picture you can see how it was applied in the construction of the right arm. I have to admit that I miss standing around a fire freezing my ass off on winter day discussing the next move. The winds from the Mon would assault us as we worked in the tiny corner of the rolling mill underneath 30 ton overhead crane.
