Looking north up Grant Street from the intersection with Fifth Avenue on Monday, October 14, 1912.
Two giant blocks on the left were razed to make way for the Union Trust Building, completed in 1917, and the William Penn Hotel, first section completed in 1916. (On the 1910 Map only 1 block had been cleared) Down Grant Street you can also see the tallest structure in the photograph, the First Evangelical Lutheran Church’s steeple. Reaching 170 feet into the smog, it has since been dwarfed by almost every building along Grant Street, especially across street, where the Steel Tower stands 671 feet taller. /
