PSA: if human relationships feel unsafe or tumultuous atm or often, ouch, but also, good news!: your social engagement capacity is not only limited to humans. The heart is an organ of perception with many nerves that speak the electromagnetic language of plants (see Heart Math Institute & also Stephen Buhner’s The Secret Teachings of Plants). The cells in your gut lining contain receptors for plant DNA & your own genetic expression changes in response to working with them. Plants are steady, generous teachers & I truly believe they want to teach us how to return more easily to the window of presence, a state of being capable of joy, groundedness, compassion, & curiosity (see the green zone in the second image above). Engaging deeply with plants was what initially taught my nervous system, which developed in a very violent home, that it can be safe to connect. I sat, I opened my sensory gates to their gifts, I cried & shook & yelled, & I came home to my birthright of safety and presence, in small steps. I still do work in this way daily. Plant medicines & heart perception have not been the only modality I’ve used to heal my own developmental trauma & activate neural plasticity, but they are medicines I have unending fondness and gratitude for. Sometimes our human community has limited attention & presence - I know I don’t always show up for my beloveds who are in psychospiritual pain in the way I wish I could - & that can hurt. One of the 5 gates of grief in Francis Weller’s The Wild Edge of Sorrow is “what we expected and did not receive,” i.e. we expect to arrive with 40 pairs of eyes looking at us (our village) and we may get just a few. We expect to be firmly caught when we fall, for our invisible gifts to be imagined before they are ripened, and invited forth for the benefit of all. I’m working to create that kind of presence and soulcraft with my human kin.I’m so grateful that there is always unwavering presence and mutual witnessing available with our plant allies, to strengthen & soothe us in turbulent times. The collective divine feminine has been experiencing some intense sacral chakra activations these past couple of months. I’m currently treating a ringworm with it. Tommie Bass was brought up tapping sweet gum trees in the winter to collect and dry the sap to use as a long-lasting, flavorful chewing gum. He collected the inner bark and decocted it with honey into a syrup and used as a cough and cold remedy along with the likes of wild cherry, rabbit tobacco, and boneset. Old timers used the twigs along with yellow root as a chewing stick /tooth pick to keep their teeth clean. Diana Beresford-Kroeger says that the spines of Honey Locust are highly antibacterial, antifungal, and as such were used as sterile surgical instruments by the Native North American tribes.
