I grew up with Mr. Rogers and liked him and his Land of Make Believe very much, but as an adult in the year 2019, it's not an exaggeration for me to admit that I can't get through most episodes without ugly crying. I'm serious, all it takes is Mr. Rogers looking into my soul from his sound stage in 1980's Pittsburgh and saying for the 10,000th time that I'm special, that I'm not a mistake, that it's a beautiful day, that he likes me just as I am, that it's okay to feel mad and sad-- and I just dissolve into a puddle. And then seconds later he's endowing the same hushed dignity and wonder on a woman who is putting tread onto sneakers in a factory as he would Yo-Yo Ma playing his cello. Fred Rogers loved people. Period. And there's not a one if us that couldn't learn something from a few episodes of his show. • I haven't read this new biography yet, but my husband (who is equally susceptible to a Rogers-induced sobfest) finished it and said he'd give it six out of five stars if he could. One of his takeaways is that Mr. Rogers didn't compartmentalize himself: the man you saw on the screen was the same man with the cameras off, with family, with co-workers, close friends, and complete strangers. The book of poetry I got for my daughters, but once again, I'm the one reading it in tears. Many of the poems were used as songs in the show--covering everything from bravery to rain to not going down the drain. But the vast majority of them return to his constant drumbeat: you are beloved, just as you are...and so is your neighbor. And who is your neighbor, I ask my girls? Everyone. Everyone is my neighbor. Love this collection - Carol Ann Duffy’s 101 Poems for Children - but that’s not important. What’s important is that my 5yo loves it so much she read me For I Will Consider My Cat Jeoffrey from Christopher Smart’s Jubilate Agno. And the other day during school run hell I actually bawled, “ONLY ONE POEM BEFORE SCHOOL!” Which means my work here is pretty much done. Christopher Smart (1722-71) featured in my first anthology, I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud. The son of a steward, he married his publisher’s stepdaughter, but his father-in-law tended to be controlling of the ‘talent’. When the two men fell out, Smart was confined to a lunatic asylum for religious mania with only his cat for company. It’s debatable how mad he actually was, but there was certainly a lively incident of spontaneous prayer in St James’s Park, London. (Dr Johnson felt that Smart was simply overly fond of praying and not fond enough of clean linen, and rather approved.)
