Plummeting 40% in just 30 years, giraffe populations are down to less than 97,000 individuals. This decline, driven by extensive habitat loss and illegal poaching, has been dubbed the "silent extinction" due to little understanding or public outcry. ⠀ ⠀ The United States, a major player in the giraffe trade, has imported more than 21,000 giraffe bone carvings and 3,000 skin pieces in the last decade alone. These numbers—while staggering—are not surprising partly because there are no regulatory mechanisms in place to protect giraffe under current U.S. law, despite the fact that there are fewer giraffe left than elephants.⠀ ⠀ On #WorldGiraffeDay today, we're joining forces with a coalition of conservation and animal welfare organizations to continue to urge the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to move forward with protecting giraffes under the Endangered Species Act. This would not only give them the protection from trade by Americans but it would also help raise public awareness about the plight and decline of these unique mammals.

We're celebrating an incredible milestone with the team at the @wildislife_zen in Zimbabwe! After five years of providing round-the-clock care and treatment for orphaned elephants, the ZEN team experienced a monumental milestone—four of the elephants ventured outside of their protected enclosure and engaged with a wild herd! Two of the orphans, Tulku and Mfana, have remained with the wild herd while the other two, Nora and Matabele, returned to the enclosure after about an hour. The ZEN team has been closely monitoring Tulku and Mfana’s movements while they explore life in the wild. This momentous event is a testament to what can be achieved with passion, resilience, and the belief that individual animals matter.
