This past weekend marked the one year anniversary of March for Our Lives, a student-led demonstration against gun violence, held in several U.S. cities. The protest was led by student activists from Parkland, the community still grieving and mourning the 17 teachers and students murdered by mass shooting.
.
Sydney Aiello, 19, was a senior at Marjory Stoneman Douglas high school during the massacre. One of her friends, Meadow Pollack, was killed. In the year since the shooting, her mother reported Aiello had struggled with survivor's guilt and had recently been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder. Cara Aiello shared with reporters that her daughter Sydney struggled to attend college classes because she was afraid of being in a classroom and was often sad recently, but never asked for help before she died by suicide.
.
Sydney died by gun shot, to her head last Sunday, March 16th. .
.
The consequences of gun violence are pervasive and effect entire communities. Father of Alaina Petty, a student killed in the Parkland shooting, tweeted, “17 + 2.” Petty, is founder of The Walkup Foundation, a school safety organization. .
.
The Child Welfare League pushes to broaden the gun debate to include social, emotional, and mental health of those traumatized by gun violence. “Children exposed to gun violence may experience negative short-term and long-term psychological effects, including: anger, withdrawal, PTSD, and desensitization to violence.”
.
If you or someone you know might be at risk of suicide, here's how to get help: In the US, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255. The International Association for Suicide Prevention and Befrienders Worldwide also can provide contact information for crisis centers around the world.

Join me on THIS Saturday as we run, walk and stroll to bring domestic violence awareness to the forefront. What I appreciate the most is that a church is leading this initiative because the incidence of domestic violence in the church is staggering, specifically for wives of church leaders. Often their charisma makes it difficult for anyone to believe that they’re an abuser therefore the victim and often family suffer in silence. So kudos to The Park Church for bringing light to this! Register today or donate as I’ll see you at the races! https://runsignup.com/Race/NC/Charlotte/ThePark5KDomesticViolenceAwarenessRUNWALK #domesticviolence #domesticabuse #silentepidemic #publichealthissue
January 11 is Human Trafficking Awareness Day.
Human trafficking must be looked at more than just a criminal issue but must be looked at from the lens of public health issue.
Did you know that 1 victim has the potential to bring traffickers 300,000/year.
Last night I did some research on Kansas, New York and Georgia trafficking cases and found some alarming reports. Very saddened to see NY with a grade of D. Glad to see Georgia at a grade of B and Kansas stands at an A. Here is the link https://sharedhope.org/what-we-do/bring-justice/reportcards/ to see what it looks like in your states and initiatives that are in place to address this issue.

"I wish I had a MAMA midwife... I am 25 when I find out I am pregnant with my first child. I didn't plan to be pregnant, but I am happy. I am a bit of a happy-go-lucky hippy and my husband and I go with the flow.
At 36 weeks pregnant the hospital rings to tell me to stop eating at midnight and come in for a routine turning of the baby (baby is in the wrong position). I return to hospital at 8am and they shave the hairs of my vagina because it makes it clean). They put a gown on me and place me on a trolley. My husband goes into a waiting room. The doctor gives me a needle and some one calls my name. It's all finished. I wake up and I am crying and in pain.
I return to the ward. A doctor tells me the baby is in a good position now and I could go home by tomorrow.
My mum and husband return at visiting hours.
During the night I wet the bed. I get up and tidy up as best I can and I feel something strange down there. I go back to bed. I can't stop wetting the bed and I'm wet and cold.
In the morning the midwife asks me what happened and I tell her. She gets the doctor and he puts a speculum in my vagina. It hurts so much that I cry. He says it looks clean but he doesn't think my water have broken. I don't understand but I'm glad he stops.
An hour later I ring the bell because something is wrong and I'm in pain.
The midwife tells me to stay in bed. The doctor comes and says I am going to delivery soon, that my baby is coming. I hurt so much and I am rushed to somewhere. I am screaming. There are so many people around and I'm scared. The baby has turned back to the wrong position and her foot is in my vagina. I am in pain and frightened. I don’t know anyone and I beg for my mum or husband.
That is not allowed, they tell me.
The doctor hurts me so badly and the baby is born and goes straight to nursery. “We will care for her,” they tell me.
I am stitched up before I can see my mum and husband. I pretend I'm ok. I'm numb and I just want to go home.
The next morning I'm sitting waiting to see my baby in nursery when I flood my pad, so I miss the opportunity and I am told I need to wait until evening now before I can se

Look at the lady behind me, she was ready to leap if I said something crazy ! ___________________________________________________________

On the other side of the coin, they are doing great work in our community capturing the essence of events that the @recovery_pac is putting on. Recovery PAC is a nonpartisan mission to get lawmakers to hear, understand and stand up for people in recovery. It’s an important community issue that as a Nevadan is happy to see happening with the opioid epidemic on the rise and destroying families. This is a public health, social justice and rights issue, so yes we should care! ———————————————————————————
