The 5kokie 5wift turns 55 tomorrow! The cute, little train (only one or two cars) on the cute, short route (less than five miles and with only three stops) - better known these days as the Yellow Line - has zipped suburban commuters between Dempster-Skokie station in Skokie and Howard station in Chicago for more than half a century. In fact, before the opening of the Oakton-Skokie station in 2012, the Skokie Swift was the only nonstop shuttle service on the CTA system. It also was one of the first lines to operate all service with one person aboard the train – the motorman – who was responsible for everything from driving, to working the door controls and even collecting fares during low-ridership periods.
But, although it is small, it is mighty! After the ribbon-cutting ceremony and demonstration rides shown in the photo from April 18, 1964 (see photo), the Skokie Swift became an immediate hit when it began public service on April 20, 1964 (also shown). More than 6,500 suburbanites traveled the route daily, aboard the 1-50 series railcars you see in the photo. This joint “demonstration project” between the CTA, Village of Skokie and the federal government quickly proved that rail transit could be a quick, convenient and cost-effective way to link fast-growing suburban markets with an existing central city.
Today, our newest generation of rail cars - the 5000-series - serve the Yellow Line. It remains one of the shortest train routes in the country, but still a popular one for getting from the northern suburbs to Chicago. i hurt myself today
to see if i still feel
i focus on the pain
the only thing that's real
.
what have i become?
my sweetest friend.
everyone i know,
goes away, in the end.
.
i will let you down.
i will make you hurt.
.
i had someone ask me why i shaved my head recently...if you wanna know the truth - it's so i wouldn't hurt myself.
