Genesis 21 - Isaac, Ishmael and Abimelech
.
I love what Sarah says after Isaac is born - “God has made laughter for me.” How sweet is that? And Abraham named the baby Isaac, which means “he laughs.” This is such a picture of joyful new parents! (Even if they are 100 and 90 years old…)
.
But then we come to Hagar and Ishmael. Sarah wants them out. She doesn’t want Isaac to have to share his inheritance with Ishmael and although Abraham doesn’t like it, God agrees with Sarah. It’s hard for me to accept that God sanctioned the banishment of Hagar and Ishmael. And even though we are reassured that God was with Ishmael as he grew up and that He promised to make him a great nation, it still seems cruel to banish a child from his home.
.
So here’s my take away - when we try to force God’s hand, there are consequences. Sadly, this is the story of the consequences of Sarah and Abraham taking matters into their own hands when they felt God wasn’t acting soon enough. They wanted the promised baby, it wasn’t happening, so they took care of it themselves. (I do this all the time!) The worst part is that the consequences fell not on them, but on two innocent people.
.
My prayer is that God will give us patience in the waiting. Waiting is sooooo hard and Abraham and Sarah had to wait a really long time. Lord, I pray that when the wait is long, you will reach out and reassure us. That you will give us the strength to wait on your perfect timing. #waitingishard #lordgivemepatience #genesis21 ❤️❤️
Genesis 22-
.
Why did I decide to start this series of Bible journaling with Genesis Maybe I should switch to Romans… Today I am in Genesis 22 and it’s the story of the almost sacrifice of Isaac. Yet another story that I struggle to understand. So many questions!
.
Because I struggle so much with this passage, I did look up quite a bit of commentary. I have recently become a fan of the website torahclass.com and I very much appreciate Tom Bradford’s insights into the parallels between the sacrifice of Isaac and the sacrifice of Christ. So all I am going to say today is that if you struggle with this passage as well, head over to Torah Class and check out Tom’s teaching. Trust me, you will be blessed. @torahclass #genesis22
Genesis 18 - Day I’ve lost track... First of all, my dad is home from the hospital and his recovery is going so well! I am so thankful for all of you who kept him in your prayers. Brain surgery sure isn’t for weenies!
.
Today we are in Genesis 18 and God shares with Abraham that He is planning to destroy Sodom because it’s really, really bad. Bad stuff is going down in Sodom. Abraham boldly (and also humbly) questions God’s plan. He basically says if you are a just judge, how can you give the same punishment to the righteous as you give to the wicked? And God allows him to question His righteousness 6 times! If there are 50, then 45, then 40, then 30, then 20, then 10 righteous people, Abraham asks and God promises He will not destroy the city if just 10 righteous people are found. .
I love how this passage shows both Abraham’s heart and God’s patience. It does, however, make me wonder why Abraham stopped at 10. Why not intercede for just 1 righteous person? In Matthew 18:12-14 Jesus says, “If a man has a hundred sheep and one of them wanders away, what will he do? Won’t he leave the ninety-nine others on the hills and go out to search for the one that is lost? And if he finds it, I tell you the truth, he will rejoice over it more than over the ninety-nine that didn’t wander away! In the same way, it is not my heavenly Father’s will that even one of these little ones should perish.”
.
I think Abraham could have gone further, interceded for just 1 person and God would have listened. He will leave the 99 for just one of us. He’ll leave the 99 for you. ❤️ #hewillleavethe99
Genesis 20 -
O-kay… Here’s my take away from the story of Abraham and Abimelech:
.
Don’t lie about your wife being your sister (even if she really is your half sister, which is a whole other issue ) so that some king won’t kill you to make her his wife (when she’s 90!). Especially when God just told you last year she would be pregnant and have your son, who will be a father to nations, within a year. It’s just not cool, man.
.
You’re welcome.
God is the best author any one could even dream of having to write the script for their life. I’m so undeserving too but He loves me anyways. I just have to surrender the pencil to Him and let Him write. He will be there with me until the end when the story is written and completed. ✏️ Llanet from @topknotsandjesus encouraged us in the Prologue devotional to write down our dreams, plans, and aspirations and then crumble up the paper and pray God’s will over our lives and not ours. I couldn’t resist using this library card from @theadoptshoppe for my list. Then used a sticky note to pray God be the author over that list. Who is writing your story today? ✏️
Day 12 - Genesis 16 -
Today’s Genesis chapter has us smack dab in The Days of Our Lives, Abram and Sarai edition. Total soap opera.
Sarai is frustrated with God’s timing (totally understandable!) and takes matters into her own hands. She tells Abram to sleep with her servant, Hagar, and he goes along with the plan. And crazily enough, when Hagar gets pregnant, Sarai gets jealous. These are all such human reactions to a very difficult situation.
There are so many aspects of this story we could explore but, since this is an insta post, I’m going to pick just one.
Hagar - she’s a servant (more accurately a slave) with no rights. She finds herself pregnant as a surrogate with a mistress that resents her and is treating her harshly. She is so desperate that she decides to run away into the desert - not a great place for a penniless, pregnant slave to run off.
But someone is watching over her. She feels completely alone, but she isn’t. God has her. He comes to her in the desert and calls her by name. He reassures her and promises her a future. Hagar recognizes God and calls Him El Roi (God who sees me). When Hagar was completely hopeless, God personally reassured her and showed that He cared for her.
Do you ever feel completely alone? As if no one knows what you are really going through? He does. God knows your name and He sees you. He cares. Call to Him and ask Him to care for you. Ask Him to reassure you and to allow you to feel His presence and His perfect peace. ❤️❤️
Just doing a little hospital Bible journaling! My dad is doing great and we are so thankful for the many prayers that were said on his behalf. Today he has moved out of the ICU and is in a regular room with TWO (yes, 2!) recliners!! Oh the luxury! I’m just listening to him snore while he gets some much needed rest and working on my Genesis journaling. #hospitalstay #grateful
