Releasing Friday: TAKAHIROMIYASHITA TheSoloist. AW2018 Mask Bag. Fall of 2018 was driven by a unique, parallel workflow between Takahiro Miyashita and Jun Takahashi. The relationship was hardly symbiotic, with the two claiming to have not seen each other’s output until 48 hours before their presentation, but both guided their work with an agreed upon theme: “order/disorder.” While Jun channeled it into an homage to the film 2001: A Space Odyssey, in which a spaceship is thrown into chaos by the futuristic machine entrusted with guiding them. Takahiro opted for a conceptual interpretation. His meticulously constructed clothing was highly complicated yet flawlessly efficient, with no apparent wasted space. The disguised faces and heavy-weight synthetic fabrics suggested a post-apocalyptic world, yet the precision of the garments suggested someone very much in command of such a place. This mask features an SOL-branded tyvek material, and can be adjusted to be used as a carrying bag. Releasing Friday: Jean Paul Gaultier SS1994 Graffiti Trucker Jacket. Throughout his career, Jean Paul Gaultier was always prescient in championing taboo and maligned parts of society. We can see it expressed in less drastic terms with his early adoptions of heavy metal imagery, during an era when public backlash against Marilyn Manson was reaching a fervor, and more powerfully with his statements on AIDS, (notably his famous Safe Sex Forever print) which claimed Gaultier’s longtime lover. It’s logical that he would have appreciated graffiti as an artistic medium long before the general public. While it was a key visual aesthetic of the ‘90s, both as a method of art and rebellion, it was often looked down upon by the art world and general public. Gaultier employed graffiti prints numerous times during his career, with this trucker jacket being one of the more notable offerings. It features some famous iconography, including the silhouetted sketch of Gaultier himself, reintroduced by Supreme in their recent collaboration with the label. In comparison to the romantic androgyny of fellow Antwerp 6 designers Ann Demeulemeester and Dries Van Noten, Dirk Bikkembergs presents a starkly masculine body of work. It was largely influenced by sportswear, and these boots are a reinterpretation of heavy-duty workwear staples. Without sacrificing any of their inspiration’s weight or functionality, they add a bungee cord fastening system and plated metal heels. Comes with both blue and black pairs of cords. Hailing from JPG by Jean Paul Gaultier, a more youthful offshoot of the designer’s mainline which aimed to cater to the market he drew so much inspiration from. It was risqué and forward thinking in its attitudes towards gender, and notably much of the line was intended to be unisex. These pants come from the waning days of the line, and channel a rave-influenced, club kid aesthetic that Gaultier both birthed and culled from. These ultra heavy-weight cargos from Dolce & Gabbana’s pinnacle effort are handmade from vintage military surplus stock, making each pair slightly unique. Weighing in at around seven pounds, a closer examination of any given pair will reveal remnants of various utilitarian military garments, including rifle bags, gas mask bags, and pistol belts. Consumed was the violent crash of a rising tide which began with AW2001’s "Riot Riot Riot,” and continued with SS2002 “Woe Onto Those Who Spit on the Fear Generation…” and AW2002 “Virginia Creeper.” With these collections, Raf abandoned the upper class and their horror-by-insinuation, as his pre-2000s work delved into, in favor of the in-your-face-angst of the working class. This is the crucial shift between Raf’s first and second eras of work - the subtext became secondary to the immediate. Consumed was a culmination of such ideals, a dystopian cityscape in which the subtext to any imagery was dissolved into over-saturation, with models going so far as to being tattooed with brand logos. In a deeper reading of the work, it further expounds upon themes of philosopher Marshall McLuhan. In his paper “Understanding Media," he famously declared “the medium is the message,” meaning that art cannot be regimented into segments, but rather must be digested as an "instant sensory awareness of the whole.” Lending credence to the claim, Consumed, when divided into separate parts and symbols, becomes stripped of its meaning and effect. However, as a whole, the collection introduces a harrowing sensory shock. This blazer was a key piece of the runway presentation, and was one of the more visually understood offerings, despite its layered cargo vest and accompanying zippers.
