Our jaws drop at this gorgeous variegated Monstera deliciosa. Unlike normal Monsteras, these are not so easy to care for. The white is a mutation that suppresses the production of chlorophyll— the life-giving green stuff of photosynthesis. This can lead to slower growth and leaves that only last a couple weeks. Don’t get me wrong, we’d still love to have one in the collection! It’s a beautiful, and of course, ‘grammable, plant, but it’s good to do some research on the specific needs of these plants before you drop your $$ on one of these bad boys. Questions about your non traditional foliage needs? We’re here to help you be a more knowledgeable and better prepared plant parent. @greeniegarden .

Have you noticed your plants changing colour in the sun?
.
It’s not uncommon for plants to look different depending on the intensity of light they receive. This most commonly occurs due to: pigment depletion, pigment induction, and encouragement of variegation. Pigments are molecules that contain a special arrangement of atoms able to interact with visible light—called a chromophore. Organic chromophores, including chlorophyll, are held together by relatively weak bonds and therefore susceptible to damage by intense irradiation. This is why too much sun causes plants to appear yellow: their chlorophyll, responsible for green pigmentation, is degraded by the light. I have this #Rhaphidophoratetrasperma growing on my windowsill, and it is a much paler green compared to my specimens growing in low-medium light
.
Conversely, plants adapted to full sun can harness pigments to protect themselves. This is most striking in succulents, where high light levels induce synthesis of colourful molecules that reflect or absorb excess light energy. Having these extra pigments protects essential molecules like chlorophyll; this is similar to why humans produce melanin following sun-damage to the skin!
.
Finally, giving variegated plants adequate light encourages the development of more variegation. White patches on #variegated foliage result from a lack of chlorophyll; therefore, the plant is less able to capture solar energy. To compensate, the plant will upregulate chlorophyll synthesis, leading to reversion and loss of variegation. Boosting the cumulative amount of light received throughout the day, but being careful not to give such intense light as to burn the leaves, will help the plant make enough food and stave off reversion
.

These little tiny guys are on my mind today... I truly can’t wait to head back into the desert next year to greet these blossoms. The Mojave Monkeyflower, Diplacus mohavensis is truly itty-bitty, stunning, and endangered. These monkeys are rated at 1B2 on the California Rare Plant Ranking system, which makes seeing them in bloom so much more special. #monkeyflower #mojavedesert #smallerthanyouthink #diplacus #mojavemonkeyflower #wildflowers #flowerpower #californianativeplants #desertflower #rareplants #endangeredspecies #flowerhunt #monkeymonkey #theresmagicoutthere #neverstopexploring #lookdown #lookclosely #botany #botanize #yearofthemonkeyflower #instaflower #instadesert #freelikeme
