You might recall that about a week ago I asked three questions on my instastory regarding your first language and your reading habit.
The questions were:
1. Are you a native speaker of English? If not, what is your first language?
2. Do you read more in English or in your first language? Why?
3. Do you read literature from your home country more than you read English literature?
I have lots of responses from you guys, thank you so much! Some of you dm-ed me with your thoughts which I really appreciate. As promised, I rounded some answers from people whose first language isn’t English answering questions 2 and 3.
▫️ Almost all of the respondents said they read mostly in English than in their mother tongue.
▫️ The reasons were varied. Among them are: ‘I feel more comfortable reading in English’, ‘I want to improve my English’, ‘Books translated into English has better quality than books translated into my own language’.
▫️Almost all of the respondents do not read literature from their home country - some of them said they prefer topics and themes in English literature.
Obviously, these do not represent the whole population of non-native speakers of English. However, my main focus was the population of Bookstagram. I want to know how this community influence your reading habit, helping you shape your taste.
Many people here mentioned that since they join the community, they read more books and discovering new genre and authors. Which is great. But I’m curious if the influence is deeper than that.
Do you think that there’s a list of ‘must-read’ books on Instagram that shape your interests towards Western/European authors? Do you think this community influence people to read more English/American authors because these books initiate discussions more? Think about books that are listed in some literary awards - excepting Nobel and International Man Booker Prize, they are pretty much centred in Western literature. And what about publishers? Big ones always print (and reprint) classics English lit with beautiful, collectible covers that look good on our feed.
The video couldn't upload in my stories...but it's so worth sharing that here it is.

Best spot in the house! My absolute favorite activity, getting a coffee in a nice cafe and reading my book. Still on the meditation train, because obviously I am first reading about it.

There is an inbuilt (probably from school) thought pattern that books must be finished. If you don’t, there is a sense of failure. This is mindset often stops people from picking up a book. The aim is to build a reading habit by reading anything and everything. If a book is not speaking to you, then don’t be afraid to drop it and try something else – the key is to keep reading and build a daily habit.
When you quit alcohol and the fog of hangovers lifts, there is often a newfound motivation to learn and live. Why not use this vitality to read? Or if reading is not your thing, download an audio book. What is that one book that has helped you on your alcohol free journey? #OYNB

I never read books. Every time I try, I just sleep off!
The first and only book that I completed is called "Summer Girl" by Linda Watkins which is a Novel.
But I was not in a happy mood some days ago due to some personal issues. I felt desolated, helpless and caged.
I needed an escape and guess what I grabbed?
"The Subtle Art Of Not Giving A F*uck" by Mark Manson.
And trust me, after I finished it, I felt much better, much motivated and energized.
At first, I thought the book was famous just for its catchy title.
But I was wrong
The book was honest.
"The greatest truths in life are usually the most unpleasant to hear"
This book is simply the best and will remain the best forever in my life.
And that is why I wanted to give it a shout-out!

I’ve been fighting a cold ALL week which means basically no reading. It is so hard for me to read with a head cold. Does anyone else feel that way? I just can’t concentrate.
.
How is everyone else’s reading week going? This cold is putting me behind but I’m trying to enjoy the rest.
