Winter time is Southern Adder time! These snakes are active all year round (we do not have any snakes that hibernate in South Africa) and Winter is breeding time! Although this one was quite small in size, adult females can reach a length of roughly 40cm. They are known to be very fiesty, huffing and puffing and striking unprovoked to ward off any potential threat. Not at all unecessary if you are this small and on just about anything elses menu. Little is known about their toxicity - no human bites have yet been documented... but they are deemed venomous and of medical significance. This species is endemic to the Western Cape, and supposedly still found in two disjunct populations - one on the West Coast and the other in the Overberg. The major threat to this species is habitat destruction, and the species is listed as vulnerable according to the IUCN. Found in the wild... Left in the wild... What a beautiful Rinkhals neonate! This must be one of the cutest snakes we have seen to date. This species have become quite scarce in the Western Cape, and all of our call-outs have left us empty handed... if there is the slightest opportunity, these guys will disappear if you do not keep a beady eye on them... They frequent areas where rodents and amphibians are aplenty - they bask in the sun in the mornings to raise their body temperatures, and hunts diurnally, but have been seen hunting nocturnally on very warm summer nights. They eat amphibians, and have earned the nickname of "Toadeaters". They also eat other reptiles as well as birds and their eggs. This feisty little snake was so beautifully coloured that it actually looked ornamental - young newly born snakes are normally more brightly coloured than their adult counterparts. Rinkhals can spit their venom from an upright position - this one tried but all that came out was big spitting noises but no fluids . If all their defenses fail they will play dead in the hope that you would lose interest in them. This species is considered very dangerous, and any bite should be treated as a medical emergency.
