The Rescue of Jude After receiving a call about a newborn calf who was in dire need of aid, I found myself at an Alberta ‘family’ factory farm - standing in front of rows upon rows of barns which held cows and calves prisoners inside their walls - in the early morning of May 22, 2018. . Soon after I arrived, I was ushered into one the birthing barns, where pen after pen of infant calves lay huddled, many shaking in fear. The new mothers & expectant moms were crowded together in tiny pens nearby. Jude was laying in the pen closest to the mothers. A tiny ball of brown curled up so small, I almost missed him at first glance. He was frail, weak, eyes wide in fear. He was desperate for his mother who stood helplessly nearby, able to see but not touch her newborn son. . Jude had not taken well to being ripped from his mother, and he did not take to the bottle. After Jude showed no signs of a suck reflex to the bottle, in an industry where lives are valued only in their ability to turn a dollar, a (male) calf that requires extra care isn’t worth the loss in profits for an operation this scale. Therefore Jude was labeled a ‘downer’, and was tossed in a pen with a damning orange stripe across the gate - a sign that he was to be left for dead. But Jude would not die in that pen, thanks to an act of kindness that changed his entire future. A worker at the Dairy had recognized a fire, an electric energy in Jude the day he was born; and it was that spark that compelled him to ask the Dairy owners to spare Jude’s life. Thanks to the kindness he showed in seeing Jude as a living vulnerable being who is worthy of help, plus a chance of fate that lead him to finding out about RR just DAYS before, Jude was going to make it out of those barns alive. . As the farmer aggressively went to collect Jude, I stepped between them and scooped up the tiny ball of bones myself. And as I turned to carry Jude to his new beginning, I shared a moment with his mother. Our eyes met as she let out a long sorrowful groan. Defeated and scared, all she wanted was her newborn baby, whom I held just out of reach. (Continued in the comments )
