“We see a dire need for this research because our world is inundated in plastic trash. We’re only attempting to solve a tiny piece of the global problem, but we must try when much of what we hold dear depends on it," says @mitbiology grad student Linda Zhong who is working with Professor Anthony Sinskey of the Department of Biology and Professor Gregory Stephanopoulos in @mit_cheme to address the environmental and economic problems posed by polyethylene terephthalate (PET). One of the most synthesized plastics, PET exhibits an extremely low degradation rate and its production is highly dependent on petroleum feedstocks. They are one of seven projects to receive an @mitenergy award. .

Vararfeldr project update! After a pretty intense weekend of warping up, I'm finally ready to start weaving the samples for my dissertation (swipe to see the whole loom and some of the stages!). A new warp is always a bit daunting, like a blank canvas, and so much work has already gone into all those threads, but it seems to work ok so far, so here's hoping for a good weave! When I can find time around all the writing/theorizing/planning for the rest of the project, that is If you're just tuning in, I'm making samples to investigate Early Medieval Icelandic pile cloaks (vararfeldir), which were a staple of North Atlantic trade routes, and supposedly very good raincoats. I'm hoping to find out a bit more about their properties and why they were so popular!

The results are in: I've found the world's cutest future beekeeper.
James decided to research bees this spring, and who better to interview than his next door neighbor! I was told he rocked his end-of-the-year presentation, which isn't a surprise because he not only asked me really insightful questions, but he also looks so darn adorable in that oversized beekeeper hat.
Super proud of this research! A few weekends ago my poster was displayed at a conference — one I could not attend b/c I was taking Surgery call When I look at this, I think back to how many times — growing up — I wanted so badly to fit in to be “cool”. When I realized it simply was not my nature to have certain lifestyles in high school or college, I put all my effort into working hard in school. Research is what gave me confidence, comfort, and acceptance in who I am ❤️ So to those who are questioning why they can’t fit in right now, remember that glass ceilings are meant to be broken. Stay true to yourself & keep moving forward, because it gets better, and you are fine just the way you are ❤️
