I have officially made it! I remember wanting to quit when I first started last January. The medical field was so foreign to me. I wasn’t comfortable touching the patients. I would come home and literally wanna cry because I wanted to quit. I honestly didn’t think I could do it. Then third semester my brother unexpectedly passed. I was for sure going to drop out. How was I supposed to continue going to school after that. Then I read an old text from my brother from when I first started. And he was telling me how proud he was of me. I knew I had to finish for him. It was hard. I would try so hard to hold back my tears in class and at Clinicals. Sometimes I would go to the restroom at school and silently cry. It was the hardest thing I ever had to go through. But I pulled through for him. My accomplishment is all in honor of my brother. I dedicate this to him. And I hope that he continues to be proud of his little sister. Breath sounds! As respiratory therapists, the respiratory system is clearly our forte, but trying to figure out what we hear can be quite confusing as a student. Let me break down some breath sounds: ⁣ __⁣ •CRACKLES: twist your hair by your ear, that kind of sounds like crackles! and crackles basically means that air is flowing over fluid. Crackles can be high or low pitched and are often heard on inspiration. -⁣ -Typical causes: CHF, Pneumonia, Pulmonary Edema(plus pink, frothy secretions) -⁣ -Treatment: suction if necessary, O2 therapy, CPAP/IPPB, Diuretics for fluid control⁣ •RHONCHI: secretions!! Thick continuous gurgling noises, often cleared with a cough or suctioning, means air is flowing over some thick secretions. -⁣ -Typical causes: COPD & Pneumonia(plus green sputum) -Treatment: instruct pt to cough or suction them ⁣ •WHEEZE: bronchospasm! The airways are inflamed/constricted and high-pitched sounds are typically louder on expiration, but heard on inspiration and expiration. If you hear it unilaterally, it may be a foreign obstruction. -⁣ -Typical causes: Asthma & Bronchitis -⁣ -Treatment: bronchodilator, aerosolized steroid to prevent inflammation⁣ •STRIDOR: high-pitched inspiratory sound caused by supra (epiglottitis) or sub-glottic swelling (post extubation or croup)⁣ -Treatment: O2, racemic epi, cool aerosol, intubate if severe⁣ •PLEURAL RUB: a coarse, raspy/grating sound⁣ -Typical causes: pleura rubbing, TB, Pneumonia, Infarction⁣ -Treatment: steroids and antibiotics⁣ ⁣ __⁣ Jacket: @medelita_gram⁣ Stethoscope: @mdfinstruments ⁣ Watch: @vivaldi.co
