The Rhacophorus malabaricus, commonly known as the Malabar gliding frog, is endemic to the Western Ghats. They get their name from their ability to make long leaps from higher perches to lower ones. One of the reasons they come down is to mate, which is typically near shallow ponds of water. They build foam nests above small pools of water , into which the tadpoles drop after hatching. Seen here is a male and a female frog. The smaller frog on top is the male. #herpingstories : Monsoon love! Not all the frogs are found around the water bodies, Some of them climbed up the trees,bushes and decided to stay there,those form rhacophoridae family. Few among those can glide as well and one such is malabar gliding frog. Last monsoon, we were fortunate to observe breeding behaviour of this beautiful frog in the pristine hills of Amboli. Multiples males were trying their chance after showers by advertising through calls on the tree branches near a water tank. As the female started to approach an male, it was suddenly grasped by one of the males, they entered amplexus and were ready to spawn. The female started kicking her legs vigorously which resulted in producing foam and started laying eggs. The male on back of the female started to fertilize the eggs and what’s next! The other males hopped on for their turn as well. At one point there were 5 males and another one was trying join the party! The drama went on almost hour and as the female was done with egg laying, All males hopped off and disappeared.The poor female was left and had to cover the nest by gathering nearby leaves.
