Mankiewicz hoped that the film would be released as two separate pictures, "Caesar and Cleopatra" followed by "Antony and Cleopatra." Each was to run approximately three hours. 20th Century-Fox decided against this, and released the film we know today. It runs just over four hours. It is hoped that the missing two hours will be located and that one day a six-hour 'director's cut' will be available. Filming of Cleopatra's entrance into Rome was delayed for months due to lighting problems. The American child actor who played her four-year-old son got taller during the delay. He was replaced by an Italian boy, complete with a thick, inappropriate accent. Elizabeth Taylor's contract stipulated that her salary be paid out as follows: $125,000 for 16 weeks of work, $50,000 a week afterward, and 10% of the gross (with no break-even point). When filming restarted in Rome in 1961, she had earned well over $2 million. In 1963, 20th Century Fox sued Taylor and Richard Burton for $50 million. He bought it for her while they were filming Cleopatra in Italy. The necklace alone sold for close to US$6 million, and the pendant itself sold as a separate lot for US$6.5 million. Elizabeth Taylor's Bulgari emerald and diamond necklace, which the Italian jeweller BVLGARI acquired at auction in 2011 at Christie's. Here’s the necklace, possibly the most iconic and fabulous of this set. The necklace is set with a graduated series of sixteen rectangular-cut and square-cut emeralds, each within a circular-cut diamond surround, spaced by graduated circular-cut, marquise-cuand pear-shaped diamond quatrefoils. It was made in 1962. You can see the detail is really spectacular – it’s not just giant emeralds with some diamonds attached, it’s complex and carefully designed. The pendant/brooch, which could attach to the end of the necklace or be worn on its own. It features a rectangular-cut emerald within a pear-shaped diamond surround. It’s very slightly older than the rest of the set, circa 1958. An emerald and diamond Bulgari necklace which was given to Taylor as a wedding gift in 1964. The pendant on the necklace was a brooch that Burton had given the actress as an engagement present two years earlier. Taylor wore this necklace to accept her Academy Award in 1966. Emerald engagement ring with a 7.4 carat square emerald surrounded by 12 diamonds, totalling 5.3 carats. "Richard was so romantic that he'd use any excuse to give me a piece of jewelry," Elizabeth Taylor wrote of his presents.
