05.02.19 If the Ricoh GR III is your first time owning a G-series camera, here’s a tip on a configuration I will use with my GR III.

The GA-1 Lens Adapter is specifically required to mount the WG-4 Wide Conversion Lens on the GR III. However, it does not come with a hood like the GH-3 for the GR. However, you can customize the GA-1 with a filter and hood to provide protection for the normal 28mm lens.

While I never had any dust issues with my GR and GR II, I know some users had problems with dust on the sensor. However, I live in Florida, and spend a fair amount of time walking along our beaches. I find using the adapter with a UV filter and hood ensures I don’t get any sand blowing into the GR’s lens mount. The filter also prevents any salt spray accidentally getting on the GR lens. Yes, we like to walk right along the beach getting our feet wet.

The first photo shows the GA-1 Adapter which uses a 49mm filter thread, with a matching UV filter, and an old metal Takumar hood. The second photo shows the assembled configuration.

I’m not suggesting you have to use this, but for me, it adds just a little peace of mind when I’m shooting in less than ideal conditions...and it certainly doesn’t affect the ergonomics or handling of the GR III.

Final note. Dust should be less of an issue with the GRIII since an ultrasonic sensor cleaner is part of the shake reduction system. You can set Dust Removal to go on when you power up, shut down, or run it manually whenever you want. And for those who have quipped it’ll probably just blow the dust to some other part of the camera...there’s a dust pad mounted below the sensor which collects the dust that’s shaken off.
