Comment the first thought that comes into mind when you see this peaceful view - For me: Bliss! Blimey, it's been boiling here in Britain this weekend. Although I'd love to be on this slow boat on the River Stour flowing gently through Canterbury, Kent, England with a good book and a small picnic. Do you have any special Sunday plans? Lovely shot by @daring_lines . Love the lush green reeds in this picture, in what's generally considered to be England’s most historic river. Certainly in Roman and medieval times the river was a major transport route, connecting Canterbury with mainland Europe. As you would expect, everything has a long and flowing history in good old Blighty. The name Stour has existed since A.D. 686, thanks to those cheeky invading Saxons. After flowing through Canterbury the river becomes tidal and eventually enters the sea at Pegwell Bay, close to the site of the landing of the first Christian mission to southern England, St Augustine, in 597 AD. . It officially hit 34C (93.2F) in London around 5pm yesterday - surpassing the temperatures of Rio, Miami and Cuba! Thankfully it's a wee bit cooler today. Hope you have a wonderful, peaceful Sunday! (AD) One of my favourite places to explore in the South East is Canterbury! Did you know you can take a boat trip from the centre down the river Stour? It’s the best way to soak in all the beauty Canterbury has to offer as well as learn a little more about its history! It’s also my favourite way to see the Cathedral @se_railway #SEhiddengems #ad

Has summer arrived where you are in the world? We hit the dizzy heights of 15c (59F) today in Cheshire Ha! However, we are due to warm up slightly over the next week, so I quite fancy taking a boat ride through the beautiful ancient city of Canterbury, Kent - captured here today by @stevgate On the left is the Old Weavers House, a lovely half-timbered tudor building on the River Stour. Although dated on its sign as 1500AD, much of the structure of the building is earlier with the foundation having been laid in the 12th century. And you know I love a good lump of tudor wood. The river laps at the side of the building, which currently houses a popular restaurant. I'm not typing this to receive a free meal, however I am available for cake reviews. Thank you. The Old Weavers House takes its name from the influx of Flemish and Huguenot weavers who settled in the area after fleeing from religious persecution during the 16th and 17th centuries. Elizabeth I granted the Flemish weavers the right to establish their businesses in Canterbury, and they are known to have used this and other similar buildings nearby. There are lots of lovely wonky buildings in this county to explore and of course the near 1,000 year old Canterbury Cathedral which is a complete gem inside. It all began many years earlier when St Augustine, the first Archbishop of Canterbury, arrived on the coast of Kent as a missionary to England in 597AD Have a lovely evening! What's your favourite season to visit Britain in? Spring, Summer, Autumn or Winter? I must admit, it's hard to beat this time of year as we enter Summer. Especially somewhere as beautiful as the ancient city of Canterbury, Kent. Don't you just love those gorgeous tulips next to the river - a perfect place for a punt! Love this by @ersyersy This city (easily one of my top 10 places to visit in the U.K.) is famous throughout the world, and was also loved by Charles Dickens. It features largely in David Copperfield, ". . . the sunny street of Canterbury, dozing as it were in the hot light . . . the sight if its old houses and gateways, and the stately, grey Cathedral, with the rooks sailing round the towers" Pilgrims have flocked to Canterbury to visit the shrine of Saint Thomas Becket for centuries. The Canterbury trot was the name given to the way pilgrims rode their horses to get to the city before the night-time curfew around 800 years ago. In fact, that's said to be the origin of the verb to "canter" The sun is shining, the grass is a beautiful deep green hue (thanks to a week of rain!) - a lovely Saturday morning indeed Have a great weekend... Oh dear. Monday again? Say Aye! if you fancy escaping to Canterbury, Kent and relaxing here whilst reading a good book! Love this shot by @barbora_bo One of my absolute favourite places in Britain is the ancient cathedral city of Canterbury. The Cathedral was founded in 597AD and rebuilt from 1070 to 1077AD - that's a gob-smacking 1,400 years of history! Mind you, not everything has been nice and fluffy through time. The Black Death hit Canterbury hard in 1348. With 10,000 residents, Canterbury had the 10th largest population in England at the time - but by the early 16th century, the population had fallen to just 3,000. During the Dissolution of the Monasteries (1536 and 1541 by 'orrible Henry VIII) the city's priory, nunnery and three friaries were closed. St Augustine's Abbey, the 14th richest in England at the time, was surrendered to the Crown, and its church and cloister were levelled. The rest of the abbey was dismantled over the next 15 years - although part of the site was converted to a palace. Saint Thomas Becket's shrine in the Cathedral was demolished and all the gold, silver and jewels were removed to the Tower of London. Thankfully there are many jewels of history to still enjoy including the ancient Cathedral itself which still stands and the wonderfully wonky medieval streets and homes - not everything was destroyed by that 'orrible King by any means! When you visit - take a copy of The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer which was written between 1387 and 1400. The tales (mostly written in verse, although some are in prose) are presented as part of a story-telling contest by a group of pilgrims as they travel together from London to Canterbury to visit the shrine of Saint Thomas Becket at Canterbury Cathedral.
