#classicheggiare Ho letto "La Freccia Nera" qualche anno fa, è stato il mio primo approccio a Stevenson e un piacevole stacco dall'epoca ottocentesca a cui sono più abituata nelle mie letture. Una narrazione scorrevole, vagamente simile ad un fantasy, dove avventura, azione e amore si intrecciano su uno sfondo tardo-medioevale tormentato dalla Guerra delle Due Rose, che personalmente mi ha sempre affascinato. Tra le prime pagine ricordo un aneddoto che mi aveva particolarmente colpita, che secondo me sintetizza tutta la volubilità umana con poche e semplici parole: "Quello è uno che va a letto Lancaster e si alza York"... Ricordo di essere scoppiata a ridere amaramente, e trovo che l'opportunismo descritto sia ancora del tutto attuale, in qualunque ambito... Ma per fortuna nei libri (e a volte anche nella realtà) trionfa l'amore... ☕ Avete letto questo romanzo? Design and the Ocean | 5. Even by the perilous standards of Scotland’s eastern coast, the waters around Bell Rock, eleven miles south of Arbroath, are lethal. By the early 18th century, at least six ships were wrecked there each winter. Yet when an ambitious young Scottish design engineer, Robert Stevenson, suggested building a lighthouse on Bell Rock in 1799 to warn approaching ships to avoid the rocks, his proposal was dismissed as too risky and expensive. Seven years later, an older, more experienced engineer, John Rennie persuaded the Northern Lighthouse Board to commission him to build it, and appointed Stevenson as his chief assistant, entrusting most of the design and construction to him. It took three years of arduous, often dangerous work to build the Bell Rock lighthouse from more than 2,500 slabs of Aberdeen granite slabs in a form of the interlocking structure designed fifty years earlier by John Smeaton for the Eddystone lighthouse on the Cornish coast. (Stevenson inspected the Eddystone during his research for the Bell Rock project.) Not only did Stevenson and the construction crew have to live off-shore for months at a time, they braved brutal weather, including a seven hour storm that killed one of them, and injured others. When the Bell Rock was finally illuminated on 1 February 1811, it was the tallest lighthouse of the age - at 116 feet high - and sported dazzling deign innovations such as rotating lights that could be spotted from miles away, whatever the weather. Scottish engineer Robert Stevenson, who designed Bell Rock Lighthouse, was born #otd in 1772. The lighthouse, which is south-west of Arbroath, is one of the greatest achievements of early nineteenth-century engineering. It was built between 1807 and 1811 on a partially submerged reef, using the latest and most revolutionary construction methods. In 1819, Stevenson commissioned artist JMW Turner to design a frontispiece for his ‘Account of the Bell Rock Lighthouse’. This stunning watercolour was the result. Turner never actually visited the lighthouse, and probably based his design on drawings. It was subsequently engraved for Stevenson’s account by John Horsburgh and published in 1824.
