Guten Morgen ihr Lieben‼️
.

Today I’m celebrating another year of life; it’s my birthday and I thought I’d reflect on the last 365 days. This last year has undoubtedly been the hardest year of my life. I ran my first marathon, the person I loved most in the world died suddenly in an accident, I became unemployed, family members struggled with severe depression...I faced many challenges but there was always a light at the end of the tunnel...I made some amazing international friends ( @cara.elle , @fitfoodjunkies ), got to visit my beautiful family in Austria & Greece ( @chrijogr ) , completed my Media/Journalism degree , travelled with friends and family, found a new job which I absolutely love, ran fewer kilometres but became fitter & stronger, tackled my binge eating head on and started training for my first 1/2 marathon with my co-workers (@ninoskajg ♀️). It’s been a wild ride but I am thankful for all these experiences and the wonderful friends and family I have in my life and for all of you for supporting me on my fitness and fit food journeys. ❤️ Carolena

Throw back to my first Boston Marathon in 2014, where I finished in 2:58. It was such a memorable race being first year after the bombings.
Here's a couple of my Do's/Don't's for your first Boston! What are your first year Boston questions? Please ask! ⬇️
DO's:
ENJOY the experience. Of course we all want to run a PR or run a strong race our first time in Boston. But
I know at least for me, I was so over the top serious about the experience, I ended up not even really enjoying it to the fullest. Be prepared. Study the course, the weather, have a game plan for places you want to eat, transportation morning of the race, drop bag procedures, what to bring to the athletes village etc. Don't wait until the last minute to figure out these things and you will have a much smoother experience! Athletes village musts:
Depending on the weather, but if it's cold/rainy: poncho, cheap umbrella/small tarp, dry socks (ziplock bag), throws away jacket/pants, sheet to sit on, old throwaway pair of shoes (keep your feet as dry as possible, for as long as possible...it was an absolute mud pit last year!!), hat, gloves, hand warmers, bagel, banana, water, etc. Not all runners will fit under the tents. Get there early or you will be left out!
Don't's:
No music. I'll be the first to admit I was a runner who couldn't run a race with out music. I thought I needed it, especially in the later stages of the race. My first 3 Bostons, I was listening to music. In '17, my headphones short circuited and for the first time ever, I could hear everything around including the raucous crowds. I promise you, the crowds will make the hair on the back of your neck stand up, and will give you so much more than any song could. Too Fast, Too early: The most common strategy I hear from IG, chatter at the expo, etc is going out hard the first roughly 6 miles to "bank time" to cancel out for the hills you will face between ~15.5-20.5. The first mile alone, you lose 130 feet. To each their own, but if you are way ahead of pace through 5k-10k, step off the gas or you will be in for a very long 2nd half of the race...trust me. I learned that the hard way. Good luck to you all!
When I’m in-season my clothes pretty much go straight from my suitcase, into the laundry... and DIRECTLY back into my suitcase lol Today is laundry day and I’m excited to use @dropps !!
