SONG DISCUSSION: Tai Shan
Well, we had to talk about this song at some point.
This is perhaps the most awkward Rush track ever. Whenever this song starts playing and that flute patch pops up, you almost go “What?!” It’s so strange.
Lyrically, it’s about Peart’s travels to China and they try to blend that synthesizer style with traditional Chinese music and it just doesn’t come across.
It’s still an okay song, I don’t hate it by any means (hate is such a strong word after all). It’s still well-arranged and all that but it is such an odd track. I actually really like the sound of the synthesizer towards the middle of the song where it sweeps from one note to another. I do like the tone of that but the song is a bit off for my taste. Even Rush themselves aren’t particularly fond of this one.
It would’ve been great if Hold Your Fire only had nine songs and they released Tai Shan as a bonus track as part of a re-release years down the road to show that this was something Rush wrote and recorded during that time but it didn’t make the cut. I think people would have a whole new perspective of Tai Shan. They would probably go, “Oh that’s a really interesting thing that almost got released back in 1987.” But being on the actual album itself is a bit of a curiosity.
Like I said, I don’t hate this song at all. I know this song is generally the designated “Worst Rush Song” within the Rush fan community but even if that’s the case, even Rush’s worst song still has merit. Personally, this isn’t even my least favorite Rush track out there but that’s a discussion for another time.
What do you all think of this song? Are there any fans of it out there? I’d love to hear what you all have to say!

The legend. Such strength and deep intensity. He made the drummer to be as equally famed as the front man of the band. Thank you Mr. Neil Peart.

SONG DISCUSSION: Show Don’t Tell
Show Don’t Tell is one of the highlights off of Presto for me, personally. The way it starts is very cool with Peart creating an almost tribal effect with his drums. It’s very pensive and atmospheric which is then followed by some really cool riffs by Lifeson. They haven’t quite done anything as syncopated for a long time by 1989 so it’s a nice welcomed return.
Many Rush historians point to Presto as the album where Rush started to go back to their guitar-oriented roots and the synthesizers began to fade away. I do think there is some truth there but the synthesizers didn’t go away overnight. They’re still there but they’re back to serving a more supplementary role in the background. And with this song, they help create this dramatic orchestration towards the second verse and it works perfectly.
We also get a nice little bass solo from Geddy towards the middle which is a nice surprise. It’s always cool seeing Geddy flexing his musical muscles.
Show Don’t Tell is a fantastic song. I actually really dig the performance of it found on their Different Stages album which was taken at some point during the Counterparts tour. I really love this song and it’s a Rush classic as far as I’m concerned. I’m surprised Rush never tried to bring this one back in their later years.
What do you guys think?
