When I talk about social media in my classes a common statement I hear is “I am hesitate to post or do insta story because I don’t want to look stupid” or “ or what if they [people] think what I’m putting out is dumb?” Well I am here to tell you WHO CARES!, SO WHAT!, GET OVER IT! The one truth I had to ask myself in doing social media is..... The people you are worried about - what sort of people are they? Are they kind to other? Do others have kind things to say about them? Do you like who they are as people? Are they someone you can look up to? If you can’t answer YES to all those things then why do you care what they think When you find your tribe of people ( people you can answer YES to) well..... those people would NEVER make you feel dumb or stupid! Real talk time. I’ve had a few people ask me about how a stylist should properly leave a salon. I’ve also seen and heard some stories that have me upset at our industry standards for relationships and respect. . So what’s the proper way to resign from a salon? Well I’m glad you asked! Because sadly, so often, we lose our professionalism and fail at navigating this with our integrity in place and fairness on both sides. . 1. Give notice. Yes - it’s your responsibility as a professional in this life to give 2 weeks notice. With that said, the salon doesn’t have to opt in and keep you for 2 weeks. But that is totally up to the employer and what’s best for them. That’s common respect in the work place. Period. . 2. Don’t be a shark. You wouldn’t believe what people do when they leave a salon. They start calling/dm-ing every client they’ve ever met within a hundred yards of the biz! That ain’t right. Make yourself searchable and public on Instagram. Provide your handle/biz email to your former employer and let them know that they can give it to anyone who asks. Do not expect your last salon to give out direct personal info such as phone number or new place of work. That’s not their job and it’s not appropriate. . 3. If you put in 2 weeks notice and the salon decides to keep you ... do not start advertising your new place of work until you’re gone. My husband is an architect. Can you imagine if he started posting and calling clients while still working for his current firm? Let’s just say ... he’d get sued! Maintain your integrity. If you say 2 weeks, honor it fully. . 4. Once you go, post and engage with your fans who want to follow you! We all know some will follow and some won’t. But let the client choose! Be available. Reach out to YOUR repeat customers. Be easy to find ... never put clients in the middle or expose them to drama. . 5. NEVER burn a bridge. Follow these steps & most salons consider you rehireable and the relationship can last long after you’ve moved on. ✌️
