When it was built (848-852) it was the largest mosque in the world. Of the mosque itself only the outer walls remain, but the minaret still towers over the area. It is 52 meters high and the most spectacular feature is its stairway that spirals all the way up. The Malwiya was an inspiration for many other minarets and its influence may have reached as far as Northern Europe. The paintings of the Tower of Babel by Pieter Brueghel could very well have been based on drawings of, or stories about the Malwiya.
