El Salvador seen from space Today, the Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission takes us over El Salvador with this false-colour image highlighting the country’s vegetation in red. The smallest and most densely populated country in Central America, El Salvador sits on the eastern edge of the Pacific Ring of Fire, and is home to no less than 25 volcanoes. The Cerro Verde National Park, seen in the lower left of the image, is over 2000 metres above sea level and includes a cluster of three volcanoes surrounded by lush rainforest. Santa Ana, the highest volcano in the country, is clearly visible with its circular peak. Ground deformation map of Tuscany This map, using data acquired between 2014 and 2019 by the Copernicus Sentinel-1 mission overlaid on top of a Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, shows ground deformation in the Tuscany region of Italy. Subsidence is usually due to a combination of ground water overexploitation, mining, natural consolidation of sediments and rapid urbanisation. The continuous lowering over time can cause damage to buildings, sink houses, crack roads, and have a severe impact on the environment and economy. In order to support urban development projects and risk assessment efforts, subsidence monitoring is necessary. This information is therefore routinely sent to the local authorities in charge of geohazard management practices. Nitrogen dioxide pollution in the Po Valley This image, based on measurements taken by the Copernicus Sentinel-5P satellite between January to April 2019, shows high levels of nitrogen dioxide in the Po Valley in northern Italy. Nitrogen dioxide pollutes the air mainly as a result of traffic and the combustion of fossil fuel in industrial processes. It has a significant impact on human health, contributing particularly to respiratory problems. Due to high emissions and frequent stagnant meteorological conditions, the Po Valley is one of the most polluted regions in Europe. Western Pakistan seen from space Today, the Copernicus Sentinel-2A satellite takes us above western Pakistan and an important wetland area. In this false-colour image, we can see part of the Indus River Delta that extends 150 km along the fragmented coastline and consists of creeks, swamps, marshes and the seventh largest mangrove forest in the world. However, due to major irrigation works and dams built on the river, as well as low rainfall, a huge proportion of the delta has been lost and the survival of the delta freshwater species are at risk.
