I’m not sure there are words to describe how it felt to see the last two northern white rhinos on earth. I’ll try. . Najin and Fatu, mother and daughter, live within Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya. Guarded around the clock by anti-poaching units, we stood alongside their daytime caretakers listening to stories of these magnificent creatures under the watchful eyes of rangers we could not see. After nearly an hour of being engrossed in the passion and love of two of their caretakers, Jacob and Peter, they invited us to touch them. Touching the rind-like, leathery skin of the last two living individuals of a species was overwhelming: one, no one should need to touch a rhino, and two, it was painful to know that there are no more of these animals on the planet because of us. To witness the love and expertise of these rangers, and walk among these last two giants, will remain one of the great honors of my life. . As we followed these rhinos to their morning resting spots (seen in the photo), we were lifted by the possibilities of ongoing research, and, something surprising: Tuawa, a female southern white rhino. As a different species, it doesn’t make sense that she stands guard for her two friends. And yet, she actually does. She allowed us into their space, even trying to get in on the interview to check if we had more carrots (yes, it was cool, but also unnerving- they weigh more than 3,000 lbs). One crew member moved away from our group on a phone call, and Tuawa didn’t like it- I’ve never seen something so large stand up so quickly! Quickly realizing nothing was amiss, she lowered herself back down alongside her two friends, and let us leave quietly. Watching the relationship between these three rhinos was unlike anything I’ve ever seen, and it made me wonder whether these two northern rhinos feel they are the last two. Certainly, they feel connected to one another, and that gave me some comfort, even if it is too late for their species. The experience made me appreciate the love that people have for wildlife, and, by sharing their story, it gives me hope that we can be incentivized to make sure other species don’t share the same fate.

A rare glimpse at Sabrina sound asleep. Since our last visit to Dr. Emerson, I've left Sabrina's carrier in her room and she's started to use it as her new nest (probably because it's cooler with better airflow). Red-tailed Hawks Both adults help incubate the 2 to 3 eggs for 28 to 32 days. The female stays on the nest and broods the young for the first 30 to 35 days after they hatch. The male brings food to the female who to feed the young. While @sabrina_the_squirrel was having her appointment with Dr. Emerson, Serena was enjoying her time with Shirley and Tim. She is by far the most active squirrel I've ever seen! She spent about 7 hours happily bouncing around from window to window observing everything outside, taking quick breaks to eat or drink or sit before continuing her marathon of fun. At the end of the day when it was time to leave, she fussed like a little kid (or like @this_girl_is_a_squirrel when she finds a receipt or chapstick) because she wanted to keep playing... These two are from the same group of seven that came in to us recently. They were in pretty horrible condition upon arrival. There is one teeny tiny tater tot out of the litter of seven. He is half the size of the other ones. He only weighs 70 g where the other ones weigh 150 to 160. SO LITTLE!! We hope to rehab all seven to be released later this year.
