Guess what this is ?! My first published first author research article !! For those of you non-scientist/engineers - the order of the authors of a published scientific article carries weight Traditionally, the first and last authors listed are the first places many people look when glancing over a manuscript
The first author, or lead author, is typically the individual with the largest contribution to the research and the person who wrote/edited most of the manuscript. On the other end, the last author, or senior author, is usually the group leader or PI (principal investigator) who supervised and/or enabled the work (). I’m currently doing one last read through of my article before it’s sent to press, and I have realized that I am not the best with my comma placement (not going to lie this was a slight shock - I always thought of myself as being decent at punctuation two missed commas in 11 pages!). Do any of you have any issues with grammar while writing your manuscripts? I am curious how everyone overcomes their challenges! Did I make any errors in this post? #grammarpolice #sciencewriting #drdevphd
This gorgeous male Pine warbler (Setophaga pinus) found its way into the nets at Breakwater! As implied by its name, the Pine warbler inhabits pine forests within its breeding range. These birds are only short-distance migrants; some birds will even stay in the southeastern US year-round! But others will migrate north to breed, as this beautiful male did!
•
Warblers typically feed on softer food items like insects and spiders. Their beaks are specially adapted for this lifestyle: being thin and pointy, perfect for picking small bugs from leaves and branches. However, Pine warblers are the only warbler species to regularly feed on seeds! As you’d expect, they most commonly feed on pine cone seeds BUT they have been known to visit seed feeders, too!

A beautiful Indigo bunting (Passerina cyanea) we retrapped at Breakwater a couple weeks ago! Long Point Bird Observatory (LPBO) operates 3 different banding stations along the Long Point peninsula. One is on mainland (Old Cut), one is about halfway down the peninsula (Breakwater) and one is on the very tip of the peninsula (properly named “the Tip”). This Indigo bunting was originally caught and banded this spring at the Tip on May 2nd and we retrapped him at Breakwater on May 4th! LPBO very rarely catches the same bird in between the 3 stations, so this was pretty exciting! Retraps like this provide valuable information about how birds forage and travel along the Long Point peninsula during migration. Swipe to see a closer look at this beauty!

#ThrowbackThursday to one of our favourite Petri dishes. This agar art was created with Pseudomonas aeruginosa. This opportunistic pathogen is of particular concern to individuals with cystic fibrosis who are highly susceptible to pseudomonal lung infections. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is also of concern to cancer and burn patients as well as those people who are immunocompromised.

Have you ever had a pair of chickadees fight over your head? (Make sure you watch with sound so you can hear the fury behind the floof ) .
~
Black-capped chickadees (Poecile atricapillus) are not only adorable, they’re feisty little birbs! They’re a very social species that overwinters in small flocks. Within these flocks, #chickadees will establish a “hierarchy” where some individuals are dominant and some are subordinate (and no, that’s not a 50 shades reference). Dominant chickadees have first access to roosting spots, mates, and FOOD! Obviously, the chickadee on my head is advertising his/her dominance to whoever else decides to land on my head... .

Today is also Dr. Jane Goodall’s 85th birthday! This woman has been a huge inspiration to myself and so many other women around the world. Her lifelong commitment to wildlife conservation is incredibly admirable, especially in our current political climate; thank you to @janegoodallinst and @janegoodallcan for everything you do! Hopefully the next time she returns to Ontario, I’ll finally get a chance to meet one of my wildlife heroes #GenerationJane .

#InternationalImmunologyDay #WorldImmunologyDay ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
For those of you that don’t know me personally or know what my research is - I’m a PhD researcher studying how ageing and age-related diseases such as Type 2 Diabetes affect the human immune system! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Ever since starting my PhD I’ve loved Immunology and I’ve loved teaching it to students ranging from age 10-18. I’ve also made loads of #ScienceScribbles tutorials that explain the Immunology basics! So if you want to find out more - go and check out my YouTube page (link in bio)!
