I'm always testing new techniques to create higher levels of life-like detail, and I thought I'd share a new finding.
I create the majority of my drawings using HB lead, and then I'll use 4B for the really dark areas.
However, the paper I use has a bit of a "tooth" to it, and the graphite doesn't always cover solidly because of the texture (it's close, but I'm a bit of a perfectionist!). So, to achieve highly detailed - yet really smooth - gradations, I'll use my HB and 4B pencil AND THEN go over this same area with a really light 4H pencil.
This does an amazing job at covering the texture and, because it's so light, it creates a really smooth gradation between shades without really altering the shading that I've already done.
I've spent the past few days go back over this entire piece with the 4H pencil. You might not be able to see the difference in photos, but I assure you, if you see this piece in person... get as close as possible, and you won't be able to see any pencil strokes since everything will be perfectly blended because of the 4H pencil. ✏️

A few days ago I saw an interview with @money23green in which he talked about the mindset of believing you're the best at what you do, and having this mindset is a requirement for even having a CHANCE at becoming the best.
This is the mindset that I adopted a while back. Every time I pick up my pencil I strive to become the best at what I do. Part of that process is putting in the extra time to draw the smallest of details. I've spent 10+ hours since my last post ONLY refining the blurry background in the right side. That's the level of dedication I have to becoming the best. ✏️
