“Café au Lait,” 6” x 6” acrylic on wood panel with 1-5/8” deep sides. Well, I did it...a little later than expected, but today is post 100/100 of #the100dayproject. I have enjoyed every moment of this #100daysofencouragement project, and I’m delighted to be able to celebrate Missosuri artist @dana.neuen as my last featured artist this year. Dana Campbell Neuenschwander explores my favorite painting themes, which are rooted in a celebration of everyday items and places. She likes to paint objects that inhabit our living spaces or the cityscapes/landscapes we move through daily without giving them much consideration. Each one of her works is like a snapshot that leads us through an avenue of space, inviting us to bring our imaginations to the scene. Her intent is to stop the action or busyness so we can explore the conditions in which things are happening and the mystery just beneath the surface of the commonplace. I love her use of color and the emotional feel of her works; they often give me a sense of entering a world in which immediacy and nostalgia are intricately webbed. Please check out her work, follow her, and send her some words of encouragement today. I won’t be posting these same daily invitations again until next year’s 100-day project. But you can continue to #makeadifference every day by #offeringkindness #sharingthelove and #beingablessing . “Opening Night,” 20” x 20” mixed media on wood panel with 1-5/8” deep sides. Today, as part of my #100daysofencouragement project, I am celebrating the work of Memphis-based mixed media artist, @shelleydukeart . Shelley describes her life as being simple, filled with music, literature, cooking, painting, parenting, laughing and traveling. Her paintings are layered, reflecting the ways that our thoughts and emotions are built up in complexity. Memphis taught me this issue of layering in a powerful way. Years ago, I was a consultant in the solid waste management industry (yes, that’s a fancy way of saying “garbage”). I was working on a project for the Memphis public works department, and the first stop for our kick-off meeting was the Civil Rights Museum. Martin Luther King was assassinated in Memphis while he was there in support of the sanitation workers’ strike. And the first thing us consultant “outsiders” needed to understand was that waste management issues in Memphis were inseparable from that story. The City was owning its history, acknowledging that change would only be progress if it incorporated a sensitivity to the past. Shelley’s art and her process are beautiful examples of that kind of sensibility. She believes that our surface may be a mask obscuring some of our experiences, but the past continues to resonate and shape the present. She likes to use ephemera, respond to vintage images, and incorporate line and penmanship into her work. I love the range of her art — from abstract to figure to still-life. Please check out her work, follow her, and send her some encouragement today. Let’s #makeadifference by #offeringkindness #sharingthelove and #beingablessing . WIP. This is a large piece (24” x 30”) and I’ve been working on it off and on (mostly off) for over a month. But I want to include it in our Fresh 2019 show that opens on Saturday, so now I’m down to the wire. I got the inspiration for this multi-layered painting when I was taking a workshop at @mcraeartstudios from @lynnwhipple . And while I was there, I had the chance to talk artistic process and philosophy with my #100daysofencouragement project feature artist for today (who happens to be Lynn’s brother-in-law). So, please join me in celebrating the work of @jwhipple317 whose collages are enjoyable at first glance, but even more fully appreciated when you recognize the complexity and structure that undergird them. Jim Whipple, a found-object jeweler, mixed media sculptor, and collage artist, is part of the Whipple clan of artists who are a significant part of the backbone of the arts community in Central Florida. He self-identifies as a foodie, BBQ aficionado, and ice cream inventor and enthusiast, because his first creative love is culinary arts — and if you’ve even been lucky enough to taste his smoked salmon or molé, you will know that the love affair is mutual! However, his originality isn’t limited to the kitchen! He is currently making a name for himself with his intricate geometric collages composed from tiny cuts of old paint color swatch cards. He recycles hardware store finds and turns them into designs that are mesmerizing for their complexity, balance, and charm. He is always pushing the form, aiming for new effects, and looking for ways to express the dance between mystery and certainty. Please check out Jim’s art — take a good look and imagine the work that goes into the detail — follow him, and send him some words of encouragement today. Wouldn’t it be a good day to honor a man who can make a mean pimiento cheese AND brilliant collages You can #makeadifference by #sharingthelove #beingablessing and #offeringkindness . “When the Jam Jar is Empty,” 6” x 6” acrylic on wood panel with 1-5/8” deep sides. Today, as part of my #100daysofencouragement project, I want to give a shout-out to @barbaradavisart — whose paintings capture and celebrate the small and large moments of life that define us. Born and raised in Montgomery, Alabama, Barbara began painting at the age of 14. She got her Fine Arts degree from Auburn, but — like many artists — pursued a more “sensible” career in the banking industry for the early part of her professional life. In that season, art was always in the background as her avocation, and she held hope that she might eventually become a full-time painter. In 2004, she discovered the joys of plein air painting, and it was a life-changing experience. Through that practice she connected with teachers and other artists who helped her hone her craft and personal style. After years of studying and painting, her dream of working as a full-time artist has been realized, and she spends her days delighting in and trying to capture the effect of light in subjects that range from landscapes to still life, portraits, figures, and animals. She also has a specialty of capturing cherished moments in people's lives with live-event paintings. (Hats off to her, because that would scare me half to death!!) Please check out her artwork, become a follower, and take a moment to encourage her today. You can #makeadifference and #beablessing by #sharingthelove and #offeringkindness . “Vessels of Creativity and Connection,” 18” x 18” acrylic on wood panel with 1-5/8” deep sides. As part of my #100daysofencouragement project, my post today was inspired by a photo of the pottery created by Maryland artist @bgmills (though my colors are wildly different). Motifs of stipes and dots repeat often in Bridgette’s paintings, book art, journals, and claywork — symbolizing the connective tissues that bind us all to one another and to the earth and elements. Bridgette is drawn to the beauty and spirit of the natural world, and her artwork expresses a dialogue with the cycles of life, patterns of growth and decay, and memory and the passage of time. Her mixed media paintings combine the captured moments of her photographs with the richness of paint, creating a bridge between two worlds – the real and the re-imagined. She hopes that her artwork reveals the beautiful melancholy and fragile imperfection of life around and within each of us. Please check out her artwork and blog, follow her if you enjoy her artistic vision, and send her some words of encouragement.
