ASMR refers to the static-like or tingling sensation you get on your skin that typically begins on the scalp and moves down the back of the neck and upper spine when you hear anything at a very high quality and through headphones.⠀

Described as a ‘drug-free mental massage’, the soothing trend has been around for nine years, racking up hundreds of millions of views on YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram. Soap cutting, whispering, stroking rough objects, blowing, slime making, paper cutting are all sounds that Gen Z and Millennials are listening to, to escape the noise of the world and calm their minds.⠀

We’ve had jackfruit pulled pork, cauliflower popcorn, beet burgers, mushroom sausages. @planetorganic is about to sell plant-based “salmon” sushi. The next ingredient to hit the mainstream, according to @guardian, is the banana blossom, or “banana heart”. It grows at the end of a banana fruit cluster, and is an ideal stand in for fish. @wickedhealthy have an incredible recipe in their book for a ‘Banana Blossom with Coconut and Chilli bowl, and the ingredient hits the big time in @sainsburys ready meals later this year. Plant based alternatives to meat come two ways - (1) alternative proteins like pea and soya or (2) fruit/veg that is nutritious and fibrous but doesn’t provide the same protein as meat.⠀

Statistics vary, @theoriginalvegansociety reports there are 600,000 vegans in Britain, comparethemaket.com say 3.5m. Kantar’s latest figures suggest actually less than 1% of the population is vegan. ⠀

We think it’s less about being 100% vegan and more about having the choice. Whole new categories for shoppers to explore, able to reduce meat and dairy intake, whilst still keeping a foot in both camps. More consumers are living semi-vegan lifestyles, with meat-free dinner consumption rising by 150m to 4.4bn in 2018, and 92% of plant-based meals are being eaten by non-vegans (@kantarofficial Feb 2019).⠀

Online categories have needed to have a far greater marketing focus and investment for some time now if they are to ensure the product options really do engage with consumer needs.
Meanwhile back in the brick stores the whole concept of traditional category management feels redundant as a relevant tool to drive sustainable growth.
