Did you know that Lil'wat Nation is a separate and distinct Nation with a cultural and kinship tie to the St'at'imc Nation? St'at'imc includes the Xaxtsa7, Skatin, Samahquam, Lil'wat, N'quatqua, Tsal'alh, Se'k'welwas, T'it'q'et, Xaxli'p, Nxwisten, and Ts'kw'aylaxw Nation Communities. They are the original inhabitants of the territory and their way of life is inseparably connected to the land.
.
This photo of mother and daughter is believed to have been taken near Mt. Currie, the heart of Lil'wat territory (and by extension St'at'imc territory), circa 1902.

Languages play a crucial role in the daily lives of people, not only as a tool for communication, education, social integration and development, but as a repository for each person's unique identity, cultural history, traditions and memory. But despite their immense value, languages around the world continue to disappear at an alarming rate.
With this in mind, the @UnitedNations declared 2019 The Year of Indigenous Languages (IY2019) in order to raise awareness of them, not only to benefit the people who speak these languages, but also for others to appreciate the important contribution they make to our world's rich cultural diversity.

When the @SLCCWhistler was being built in 2007, a black bear and her cub ambled through the front entrance and had a good look around. Their presence was cause not for panic, but for celebration. After all, to the mostly Squamish and Lil'wat people on site that day, these shaggy, sharp-clawed creatures were a blessing, signifying power and good luck. - Excerpt from Community Stories - AboriginalSuccesses in British Columbia, produced by the Department of Indigenous and Northern Affairs @Canada.
