Just a quick PSA — if your dog regularly eats dirt and is on the low energy spectrum, please check their gums and tongue. They should be nice and pink. When we brought Coco to the e-vet we thought she just had a cold or flu. Turns out she has a life threatening condition called IMHA, which is an immune response by the body to attack red blood cells. Her gums were pale (severely low RBC count) and she has been eating dirt (mineral/iron deficiency) from one specific area in our yard for a few months. In her case she was/is severely anemic and needed a blood transfusion and ongoing steroids to battle her condition. Signs of IMHA: Lethargy/weakness
Panting constantly
Acting tired on walks or with exercise
Not wanting to eat
Acting thirstier
Pale or jaundiced gums
Abnormally colored urine
Eating dirt
