You just never know ... that's what I love most about night photography; you really never know what the night will bring! ⭐️⭐️⭐️ I was starting to head home for the night. After taking photos north in the trees of the green glow, I decided to pack up and head toward home. As I drove out of the trees I started to see this intense light to the east. When I got a better view, the bright arc stretched right across the sky fading to the west. It was amazing to see! Dancing right overhead!
Needless to say, I didn't end up going home quite yet... #auroraborealis #northernlights #nightsky #nightphotography
‘The lady’ #AuroraAustralis put on a show for our observers at Davis Station in #Antarctica on 6 May 2019.
Auroras form when charged particles from the sun are drawn towards Earth’s poles by our magnetic field. As they enter the atmosphere, these particles ‘excite’ oxygen and nitrogen atoms⚛️—raising their electrons to higher energy levels. As the electrons fall back down to their original levels, energy is released in the form of light. See our BOM Blog for more.

Yesterday I went back to this mountain, we are supposed to be in spring, but you know, in the Arctic spring arrives later, in many parts of the mountain there is still more than a meter of snow. ❄️ .
Now it is very different, until the end of August we will not see the night in the polar circle, so it is impossible to see aurora borealis. But we will enjoy the midnight sun and waiting to see the show of this photo again .

Good day everyone. My name is Colin. I'm a part-time photographer based in Saskatoon, SK, Canada.
I've been given the honour of taking over the Universe Today Instagram channel for a day. You can find my own gallery at @chatfieldphoto.
I'll share three of my favorite astrophotos with you today and here's the first one.
I took this picture only about 3kms east of Saskatoon, down a grid road. This was taken during a very brief window of time during an aurora display on November 9, 2015. The display of lights was fairly weak all night. It was very cold, being around -40 and I had packed up to go home as I had to work in a few hours. I was heading back home for the night when I happened to look back to see what may have been going on. The sky exploded and I decided to stop for a few more minutes as the rest of the night's pictures were not that interesting due to the weak show. This display only lasted about 10 mins, then was gone.
This was taken with a Canon 7D MKII and Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 lens at 11mm, f/2.8, ISO 1600, 10 second exposure, white balance tungsten (3200K). #saskatoon #saskatchwan #exploresask #meanwhileinsask #sharecanada #shareyourweather #tokinausa #canoncanada #astrophotography #astronomy #space #aurora #auroraborealis #northernlights #spaceweather #visitsaskatoon #explorecanada #cangeotravel #sharecangeo #sasksnapshot

This morning, the Sun released the most powerful solar flare recorded since at least 2008. Our nearest star has been lively all week, emitting three flares – two of which were "X-class," the most intense kind. NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory, which watches the Sun constantly, captured this image of the largest flare.
Solar flares are powerful bursts of radiation. Harmful radiation from a flare cannot pass through Earth's atmosphere to physically affect humans on the ground, however — when intense enough — they can disturb the atmosphere in the layer where GPS and communications signals travel.
The most recent flare was the largest so far in the current solar cycle, the approximately 11-year-cycle during which the Sun’s activity waxes and wanes. The current solar cycle began in December 2008, and is now decreasing in intensity and heading toward solar minimum. This is a phase when such eruptions on the Sun are increasingly rare, but history has shown that they can nonetheless be intense.
